Steering Coupler/Rag Joint - what is this one?

I'm helping a fellow with his worn steering coupler. I'm helping remotely so I have not seen his car. He says it is an early 69 so it should use the 67 to 69E steering coupler.

I have pictures of his coupler and it definitely has a 67-69E lower half to fit the fully splined gear box shaft. However, his coupler definitely has a 69L-82 upper half.

Does the 69L steering column shaft have the same spline configuration as the 67-69E so a mixed coupler can work?

    Thanks,

    Don

The 67-E69 and L69-82 steering couplers are not interchangeable. They might be if some modifications were made to the shaft or coupler but I definitely do not recommend such.

By the way, the L69 coupler did not enter PRODUCTION until very late 1969. My original owner 1969 built in mid-September, 1969 originally had the E69 steering gear box and coupler.

      Thanks Joe.

I know that the lower half of a L69-82 coupler will not fit onto an early gear box shaft. But will a L69-82 coupler upper fit onto an early column shaft?

If not, then the car must have a later column because it does have a mixed coupler. Early lower and Late upper.

Also, by the way the 69 Judging Guide makes no distinction about the Early and Late 69 coupler differences. I don't have a guide but the fellow I am helping send me a copy of those pages.

The upper flange is the same from 1967 to 1982.
