John: if your 57 is to be NCRS judged, cut the ends so they are at 13/16th to 1 inch protruding from the bezel. see judging manual for details. I recently finished restoring 57 vin 5529. got exhaust system from corvette central had to remove about an inch from tail pipes to fall within the NCRS judging manual specs. I did so without removing the pipes. sorta bandsaw then dressed with old fashioned. flat bastard. mike

          Re: Tailpipe (again)

Thank You Rod, John, and Mike. This is exactly the info I was looking for.

History; My car is a nice driver. It was way to far neutered, as well as hit hard in the rear end and repaired before I bought it back in 1971.

One of the early mods to the car was the tailpipe tunnels were removed, the holes glassed over, and fitted with 61-52 tailpipes that exit back of the rear whelks - to prevent exhaust gasses from straining the paint. All the 57 outward vertical bumpers were removed and glassed over too. This most likely took place after the accident, as part of the repair process.

The car is now in process of being repainted - back to the original color (black with silver coves). The car was repainted all gray after the accident.

I bought all new repro chrome bumpers, but I considered the tunnels to be beyond scope, plus I like the 61-62 pipes. So I am having tailpipe studs installed in the bezels to at least look more original, even though they will be non-functional. This is why my tailpipe questions.

I have been working with Tom Ames on the paint and progress is coming along well. I should have the car back in about a month - can't wait. I will post some photos soon.
