    John Hinckley memoir

I'm sure most of us remember John (1941-2021). Not long after his passing, many wondered what would happen to all his personal papers given that he was a prolific writer about Corvettes and Camaros for both magazines and Web sites.

John and I formed a bond over 20 years ago through the TDB when I mentioned that my first job out of college was with Pontiac Motor Division as as production engineer and was engineering liaison to the Van Nuys Chevrolet plant for the '69 Firebird pilot built; and not long after I came to understand that John was the Lordstown launch manager for the Cosworth Vega. (I'm the original owner of #2110, an early '76 model).

John and I first got together at the 2002 Monterey National Convention and spent a long and pleasant dinner together swapping war stories, and he graciously and enthusiastically accepted my invitation to write articles (I recall three) for the Cosworth Vega Owners' Association Magazine, and he was also guest speaker for at least one annual CVOA National Roundup held in the Detroit area.

Given all the automotive Web sites and the number of auto industry employees and retirees it's surprising that relatively few choose to participate in the enthusiast community, but John was different. I'm not sure what GM executive coined this phrase (maybe Ed Cole?), but John definitely had "gasoline in his veins", and he enthusiastically shared his knowledge with everyone who was interested. He could keep one entertained for an entire evening with tales of the "personalities" he interacted with along with stories about the mindless bureaucracy, foolish politics, and screw-ups that would leave you slack-jawed, shaking your head in amazement or laughing until you cried.

Earlier this week I was contacted by Kurt Sonen of the Camaro Research Group with a Cosworth Vega question. He informed me that he had worked with John on several research projects, and he is currently working with John's widow on the disposition of his writings. Many had suggested to John that he write a book, and though he never firmly committed, he was working on a memoir, but it remained incomplete due to his health issues.

Kurt edited the draft into a complete document and the 41-page pdf is attached. I'm sure all will find it a thoroughly enjoyable read.

John also left a library of articles with the CRG, many of which may be of interest to vintage Corvette owners at:

    Duke,

Thank you so much for sharing this !
I can't wait to read this memoir in its' entirety...and absorb some of his knowledge and experiences.

I sincerely hope the accumulation of his works are preserved in some useful way for all marques he participated in.

"...He could keep one entertained for an entire evening with tales of the "personalities" he interacted with along with stories about the mindless bureaucracy and foolish politics that would leave you either shaking your head in amazement or laughing until you cried." As an ex-Ford employee, I can attest to your statement above...this was not something unique to GM...

    Again, thanks much !
    thx,
    Mark

John also spoke about a book on the history of Fisher Body he was working on. He mentioned on another forum before he got sick that it was finished but not fully edited. Hope to see it in print someday.

I just spent the last about four hours reading John's memoir. As they say I just couldn't put it down. Fascinating reading, John was quite a guy, but then those of us who were rewarded with the chance to spend some time with him know that.

Thanks Duke for this remarkable chance. In my mind I could picture John telling these stories.

          Duke,
Thank you so much for sharing. I, like many here, never had the good fortune of meeting John personally but I felt a kinship with him interacting here and on the CF. It appears his personality was as great as his wealth of knowledge.

Very interesting read for sure. Would like to hear some of the stories from the other people he wrote about. I am happy to see his memory's will be preserved for others to still learn from his experience. But kind of disappointed on the lack of stories from his short time at St Louis. But on a good note would love to find of those 66 Chevy II wagons with a L79 4 speed.

Thank you for posting this. I am new to the TDB and CF and only knew him through his postings and even through those you could see the measure of a great person.

I am humbled to be able to call John my friend. Our acquaintance started at the NCRS, and the Vetteheads. Over the many years, I learned, we learned, laughed, and joked about cars and life. Sharing adult beverages made the tears that came to our eyes easier. His friendship and life is and will continue to be missed.

A thoroughly enjoyable read, John had a great life and this is a great tribute to it. Thanks Duke for this, and I didn't know you started at Pontiac, now I know who to talk to as I look for an early '60s Poncho Super Duty.......

Duke, Great thread and thanks for sharing that with us all. I started reading this morning and couldn't put it down but had to because of chore duty on the house. I'll be getting back to it next opportunity I can sit for a while.

I, like many, miss John's wisdom and appreciate the time I knew him, albeit only online and by phone. I once had a opportunity to meet him at the Hotel in Charlotte at the 2010 Nationals, but I had just gotten a phone call and had to pass without talking in person. I will always regret we never met. He was always one of my Mentors, and will continue to be.

                          Duke:

Thank you for sharing John's memories of his early automotive career with us. During this same time period I worked summers in the Chicago/Gary Steel Mills, and after graduating college worked production in the Gulf Coast chemical plants. I can clearly relate to his stories, and have many similar experiences. Only the places and names were different. I read about half his story last night and could not put it down. But I did to get some sleep. I will finish it tonight.

John was a remarkable person who freely shared his knowledge with all of us that simply asked. I learned a lot from his posts/threads here and on the Corvette Forum. I was fortunate to meet him in person at the NCRS Nationals in St Louis many years ago. I could have talked with him all night about our cars. I had the opportunity to help (in a small way) with his induction into the Corvette Hall of Fame. He deserved this and more.

Thank you JohnZ for all your help to folks like myself. We all benefited greatly.

                          Larry
