How Us Old Geezers Drive Our Corvettes

I know this is a GTO not a Corvette, but this YouTube video reminds me of how many of you old-timers drive to get ice cream.

Well, hell...that was sure cool. That car is 60 years old and the owner is likely 70 or so. The car still gets with the program and, obviously, so does the owner. I kept worrying about a deer or slow moving vehicle on the other side of some of the hills but, thankfully, no issues. Great video! Thanks for sharing. Now, someone needs to do the same with a C2.

Now that is the way you should test drive a car!

Great vid. Nothing puts a shizt eating grin on my face like lighting up the tires.
Though I have a few more years before I get to his age Ive owned my car for 40 years!
He does need to be taught to not let out of it on the 1-2 shift. Much easier on the drive train...lol.

His downshifting technique definitely needs remediation.

I had a friend back in the day with a '65 Goat, pretty much the same as this one... no PS, PB... but base 389/335 HP engine, WR 4-speed, and a 3.23 Positraction axle. It was a beast in a straight line, but when faced with a corner or a twisty road it was an absolute pig. The organic lining drum brakes didn't match the power of the car (the J-65 metallics on my SWC did) and the steering must have had a dozen turns lock to lock. You can see that in the video.

I don't think any same era vintage Corvette owner would want to trade down to any so-called muscle car.

BTW, I'm pretty sure this particular GTO in the video does not have an OE camshaft. No OE Pontiac camshaft idled that lumpy.

The hottest OE GTO setup was the 360 HP tripower engine that I recall had a hotter camshaft than the base engine with an AFB carb, a CR 4-speed and 3.90 Positraction axle.

The equivalent "special purpose" '64 Corvette would have been the FI engine with a 4.56 axle.

I enjoyed the sound of the engine! He sure used a good portion of the road!

I really enjoyed that. That GOAT is a strong runner and he drives it the way it should be driven. As we get older the young guys rail on us for doing nothing more than setting out lounge chairs at cars and coffee. Nothing wrong with cars and coffee. This proves, that to many of us, it's more about the drives to and from cars and coffee.

Bought a 65 GTO black convertible new. Had redlines & would put it in second & set there and just spin the tires. Dont know why the guy was jumping around while shifting? Maybe his was hard to shift. Mine came with a Hurst shifter

                              Kenneth,

How would you compare the performance of your GTO to your Corvettes of the same era?
