Door Panel Virtual School - 1972 Cert Label Slash-Hyphen

During today's Virtual School by Mike Treece, there appears to be an unknown about the Certification label on the driver's door end cap. Some have a hyphen between the month and year, some have a forward slash. In the presentation there were two labels from the same month that show each separator.

Just to add to the discussion, my May '72 uses the hyphen:

I don't know. What was presented sounded to me like it was just a '72 thing. If the dates were typed in '72, I'd think they were typed for '69-'71 but the slash-hyphen didn't seem to be notable for those years.

Human typing error would help explain why my VIN has what appears to be a 5 over top of another number, maybe a 1, after the S. (Prior to '72, the label's VINs were done by impression of the POP plate. In '72 the label contains the words Passenger Car below the VIN plus the vehicle weights above the blurb - neither of which is on the POP nor is the VIN the same style.)

Regarding the one that Owen labels as "interesting," GVW and PASSENGER CAR were added in January. Perhaps a human typing these numbers in had trouble with the new format and alignment. Some of us who used typewriters remember how hard it was to get lines even.

It's also interesting to me that the same font, same machine was used for the VIN and "Passenger Car" for the other labels, but that January label seems to have the first 7 characters of the VIN (what would be the same on all base-engine labels) and "Passenger Car" printed from a different machine than the GVWR specs and sequential VIN characters.

Examine the type styles on the two April cars that are only 140 units apart... (upper one a repro?)

I don't know if anyone has also done a study on the GVWR specs but I noticed you can get an inkling of some of the options that the car may have had by using the engine code plus accessory weights. For example looking at the W-code (454) cars, the front weights range from 2010, 2020, & 2090. It's just a rounded weight but may provide some guidance when looking at cars full of options but with low weight ratings on the label.

The 1972 Model year cars built prior to Jan of 1972 appear to have used a POP to imprint the compliance label's just as the 1969-1971's did.

IMHO VIN 6845 above shows artifacts of the trans data from a POP.

I agree James. When searching for these labels I came across many '69-'71 examples that more clearly show the label was produced from the POP plate. Some are quite obvious with the second line POP info also on the label.

The January 1972 decal illustrated above has 2 dates... just below the 1-72 there is a 12/71.

The Black 1971 LT1 my brother and I own has part of the engine assembly and artifacts of the trans stamp on it.
