    C1 Trunk tower spring removal

I found a guide explaining how to install the tower springs that go in the trunk of a C1 bit I need a guide explaining how to safely remove them.

Can anyone explain this to me please or point me in thr right direction to get this info?

    Thanks

It's been quite a while since I did this but believe you may have to remove the top nut on the rod in order to remove or at lease partially withdraw the rod to get the spring out. I'd probably wrap a length of wire around the spring to secure it to the bracket but there isn't a lot of load on them. Grab the spring with vice grips around the body, remove which ever nut gives you the best access to withdraw the spring and wrestle it out of the assy by manually using the vg as a handle to compress the spring. These aren't going to launch you into the next county like a front suspension coil can.

The way I did this was to wrap zip ties around the numerous loops of the sprint to keep them compressed. That made it much easier for me to do it. I don't remember the exact procedure though. Take lots of pics to refer to to get them back together when you reassemble.

Rod, Yes use zip lock to keep the spring depressed. lower the trunk lid as much as you can this will compress the spring. then use zip locks to keep the spring depressed. it will come out easily. putting in the new spring will require you to use a a threaded round stock. tighten that up to shrink the spring. it will fit right in. BTW is this a 58? If so you will need to insert a deck lid spring inside of the trunk spring. that extra spring will hold up the trunk. Bob Baird wrote in his book how to do this. It might be in the technical archives.
