    66 coil spring tag question

I just finished restoring my coil springs and ready to put some rust inhibitor on them , was the ID tape installed before or after the coating . i am thinking after would be the correct answer but i have been wrong before.

Re: 66 coil spring tag question

After. Front Spring Chart #3843580 specifies "Spray or dip with Lucas Rustproof #635 compound or equivalent for rust prevention (mix 7 parts of water with 1 part Rustproof compound)." " Service coil springs must be individually identified by part number with printed tape applied on the center coil of spring. All coil springs except service must be identified by part number (1/4" high) and assembly plant code (1/2" high) printed tape applied on any one of the three (3) center coils of the spring.""

      Robert
Here's two photos of original spring & wrapping ID tag from my mid-Jul '66 build, CA car. Rust prevention stuff pretty much gone, but tag has no evidence of coating on it. Looks like they didn't exactly hit the "... one of center three coils ..." referenced in David's post.
