1963 Parking Brake Warning Light In Instrument Cluster

A friend called me the other day, and inquired about the parking brake warning light in the dashboard.

Mine has always flashed. In other words, I have a #257 bulb installed. I've had my 63 for over 50 years, and I always remember it flashing, just like the headlight warning next to it.

He referred me to the OPS section of the 63 judging manual. Sure enough, if I'm reading it correctly, when the emergency brake is applied, the BRAKE light is to stay ON, and not flash.

Have I been incorrect all of these year?

Went out with a buddy yesterday who has a 65. I asked him about his car. His immediate answer was "IT FLASHES"

The vendors sell the #257 flashing bulb described as "1962 to 1967 Headlight and Parking Brake Flasher Bulb"

So, I'm curious what others have, not only for 63's, but for 63's to 67's.

Chuck you're up too early. Both warnings flashed 63 through 66. Parking Brake warning was solid red in 67. My 6th Ed. First Printing of 63/64 JG says Brake warning flashes after warming up.. Sounds like someone made an unauthorized alteration to your JG.

Thanks, Don. That's what I've always thought, but.............

From the 7th Edition, 2021 Judging Manual. Page 2 OPERATIONS.

HEADLIGHT AND PARKING BRAKE WARNING INDICATORS.

"A flashing red LIGHTS indicator will illuminate in the instrument panel when the headlights are on, but the buckets are not fully rotated open. As the flashing function is built into the bulb and heat is generated, it will normally take a few seconds for it to warm and begin cycling. A red BRAKE warning light, located in the the instrument panel, will function when the parking brake is applied. This light will NOT flash. Confirm that the light extinguishes when the brake is released and then reapply the brake"

"This test is to only determine that the lights lit up and flash."

The capitalization of the NOT is my emphasis.

My buddy is getting his car ready for his first NCRS meet coming up in a few months.

Chuck, there is a change from Dave Brigham on this, it is on the front page of the forum, under 63/64 technical judging manual Errata sheets. There were a few corrections also sent on to the early buyers of the JM Also.

Thanks to all for the "reality check". I shot an EMail to my buddy telling him to leave the flasher bulbs in both the LIGHTS and BRAKE indicators.
