1966 Convertible top frame Used vs. Aftermarket (Sully's Tops)

I need to replace the missing top frame on my 1966 convertible. I have located a used factory top frame which I am told is in good condition. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with Sully's Tops. Sully's Tops is an advertiser in the Drive Line and in talking with the owner it sounds like they have been in business for a long time and provide frames that pass NCRS judging.

Are there any unique or specific markings, stampings, date codes etc. on a factor frame that I wouldn't get on an aftermarket frame?

Since I can't see the used top in person I have to rely on photos which seem to show no real issues.

I would think generally speaking factory is always preferred over after-market. The purchase price and shipping between the used top and Sully's are pretty close so cost is not going to push me one way or the other.

Anyone have experience with NCRS judging and Sully's Tops?

    Thanks, Wayne

      Wayne,
In my judging experience on the Interior section, not once have my partner and I ever looked for any markings or date codes.
Typically, Configuration and Finish are the examined areas.
You might ask Sully's where they got the tooling for producing their frames.
It's possible that they use the original GM equipment.

Brian; Thanks, I will ask Sully's about the tooling if I decide to go with an aftermarket frame.

I've used Sully's C1 tops and bows. They make a good product. I've installed Coffman complete frame with top on a 62 also, and a good product as well. Took some work to get it fit, but worked out ok.

The rear bows on Sullys are aluminum for the C1 56-60, which is NTFP as originals were steel, and the T-nuts on repros are not recessed as original.

I have a process to correct this anomaly. In judging, a wise judge could use a magnet to check rear bow if permission given by the owner. This is a area overlooked because one cannot see the rear bow.

I'm not familiar with the C2 repro frames but you should ask about any atypical areas before you commit. I've never seen a date code on any frames I've restored, C1 or C2.

Coffman makes C1 top frames but unsure about C2 lately, but you may want to research. They may have tooled up for C2 frames.
