    Help understanding 1969 fuel pump date code

    Looking for some help and an education regarding a part number and date stamp on a 1969 fuel pump for a L-46 350 Hp motor. My NCRS book shows that I should have a fuel pump with part number 40658 which I see in the attached photo. What is a mystery to me is the description in the NCRS book stating that the fuel pump should have a "stamped two letter date code" and 5-digit model number. Book says that the correct fuel pumps should also have AC cast into the narrow supporting position near the fulcrum for the lever.

    1. The fuel pump has the correct 40658 stamped on the flange, seems correct to me.
    2. What date code would XA be?
    3. This fuel pump is missing the AC cast near the fulcrum. Does this mean it's a reproduction? I assume "yes" it's a repro.

    My book also states that reproductions and service-replacments had date codes stamped in different locations and I believe that applies here with the date code after the part number.

    Thanks for your input. Any educaation you can give me on how to decifer the two letter date code process is appreciated. Is there an appendix or page somewhere that shows all the two letter date codes for 1968 - 1969?

      Re: Help understanding 1969 fuel pump date code

      Hey Patrick,
      Thanks for the link. Nice to hear from you.

      Considering my engine build date of October 30, 1968, I should have an "H" for the 1969 model year preceeding the part number stamp 40658 for my early 1969 L-46 350 c.i. / 350 Hp.

      Then, if I have the 1968-1969 month date code interpreted correctly for fuel pumps, my best case scenario (6 months prior to engine assembly) would be something similar to:
      HD = 1968 April
      HE = 1968 May
      HF = 1968 June
      HG = 1968 July
      HH = 1968 August
      HI = 1968 September
      And, with an October 30, 1968 engine build date I guess even HJ = 1968 October would be possible since the engines were assembled and shipped to St. Louis pretty close to final assembly dates.

      Finding a correctly dated fuel pump for my car might be a needle in the haystack but at least I know what I am looking for now. I hope I have the date code figured out correctly?

      The fuel pump in the photos is obviously a reproduction or service-replacement.

        The fuel pump was installed at St Louis Assembly, so the fuel pump and carburetor dates (and other engine dress items) are dependent on your Body Build Date on the Trim Tag on the driver's side A-pillar. In most cases the difference between the engine build date and the body build date is not significant enough to matter, but occasionally it is. It is bast to use the proper base date for the appropriate parts.

          Re: Help understanding 1969 fuel pump date code

          Hi Terry,
          Thank you for the clarification. My car's final assembly date is October 31, 1968....just one day later than the engine build date.

          And, it was number 405 in one of the production runs. There is hand written white grease pencil in three different locations on the car along with the letters AC in two of those locations on the bulk head behind the passenger seat and under the passenger side underbody splash shield toe pan. The other 405 is written vertically on the outside of the rear passenger cabin.

            Re: Help understanding 1969 fuel pump date code

            My 70 LT-1 has a LH40709 on it. L=the month and H=the year. We think... H is 1968. A through "K" or "L" would be the month. I don't think "I" was used. I've not seen a fuel pump using an "I", but I've not seen every pump yet.

            So your list would should read....
            DH = 1968 April
            EH = 1968 May
            FH = 1968 June
            GH = 1968 July
            HH = 1968 August
            IH or JH = 1968 September

            Next revision of the TIM&JG will have better pictures and description.

              Hi Gary,

              Thank you for the correction on the fuel pump date codes that I should be looking for. Thanks also for the "I" clarification not being used in date codes. I thought that might be the case but I wasn't sure.
