Re: 66 hood support mounting plate
I have a dremel tool that's a great idea as well. I'll try that and see if I can get it flattened out. Maybe even make a small depression to get the bit started in the center.
Dennis I'll have a look at those bits. Haven't seen those before, have you used them successfully? Not inexpensive but if they work....

Yes, I have successfully used them to drill out broken drill bits. You need to follow their recommendation for RPM's while using the bits.
They attend several trade shows and their demonstrations use these bits to drill holes in hammer heads, files, ceramic tiles, and other "hardened objects".- Top

Re: 66 hood support mounting plate
Dan, Good luck with the Dremel. Have a drill handy right away after the grind on it, since it'll be really hot from the grinding which may help.
Too bad they don't sell those bits individually.

If you are talking about Bad Dog Tool Bits, they do sell bits individually.

Re: 66 hood support mounting plate
Made some minor progress with the dremel tool and an aluminum oxide bit. It definitely works on the hardened steel and created enough of a depression to center a bit. Tried my cobalt bits and barely made a dent. The bad dog bits would be worth trying I think. Thought I might order a couple bits for about $15 total, they want $40 to deliver. Not to sound cheap but that's annoying.
So I'm off to the hardware store to pick up a few more alum oxide bits for the dremel to see if I can improve on what I've got so far.
Probably end up ordering the bad dog bits as well.)Attached Files- Top

Re: 66 hood support mounting plate
Dan,
In between grinding and drilling sessions I think it would be good to continue to apply something like Kroil Oil. My fear is that the next attempt at using an Easy-Out will wind up with another broken Easy-Out. And obviously use the largest diameter EasyOut possible.
