        Richard,

I don't have a C2 but it's fascinating to read how you worked through the design.

I noticed you use a small butane torch for soldering. Do you like that better than an iron? It seems like the open flame could be an issue while working in a cramped space.
And for shrink tubing a heat gun works well.

Mark, My friend and I restore antique mahogany boats up in NH. He got me tuned in to the mini torch over 20 years ago. On all of the wiring we use period correct uninsulated terminals and solder them. It's much easier that a iron or gun. When I rewire a boat it takes easily 50 to 75 terminals.
The torch works great for heatshrink too, but I mostly use a heat gun for that.

Before I solder the terminal I slip on a rubber insulator. This is how wiring was done originally.

We use both cloth covered and hi temp vinyl jacketed wiring. If we use a original engine, cloth. Modern repower, vinyl, but cloth up to the cockpit instead.

The flame on the Snap-On torch can be controlled down to a tiny flame. This past summer my friend gifted me that brand new SO Torch. I love it.

Some wiring examples of a 1930 Garwood we repowered in August due to reverse applied water injection in it's 350 small block. We replaced it with a new Stroker 383, fully marinized with all new aluminum reverse-elbowed exhaust to prevent water intrusion in the future. Also made our own 3" stainless outlet pipes.

I did all of the wiring. We also added relays and safety switches to kill the engine if loss of oil pressure, along with other features for owner status monitoring. A fun project. I also created a wiring diagram for the owner as it'll be easier for future diagnosis.

Some photos. The day we did lake trials all was perfect. The owner owner was very pleased.

Wooden cars and wooden boats display remarkable craftsmanship. Beautiful quality work -- including your wire skills. They all fit together well.

I once got a ride in a Chris Craft on the St. Clair River. I was told the Chris Craft factory was across the river from where we were. That rivals my first drive in a Corvette. Wooden boats are beautiful.

              Rich,
They are lucky to have you working on their boat. Beautiful work and very thoughtful to include the wiring diagram.
Gar Wood boats epitomize wooden boat design, quality and beauty. Do you know any of this particular boat's history?
              Thanks

Thanks for this information. Being a non-smoker, I have no need for the cigarette lighter to be active. I could just not attached the lighter until I get the car judged, hook it up for judging and disconnect it afterwards. I would put an insulation around the wire until needed.

Jerry, I follow, but if you carry a 12v air pump or in particular a cell phone charger, you may need it and want it fused.

Wow, we have a 51 Chris Craft off of Lake Winne (sp) I'd butcher it to death. We had a place at Lake Newfound from 1946 until 2003-4 and owned the Chevrolet dealership in Bristol from 59 - 72. My dad's cousin builds lobster yatchs and has a place on an island off the coast of Maine. LOVE the area, but wow it's so cold even in august you can't go in one foot at a time... it's all or nothing!

James when we're vacationing in NH we often head over to what we call "The Big Lake"(Lake Winnipesaukee) about a hour or so from our "Smaller" Lake Sunapee area. Winni' is 45,000 acres. Sunapee is 4,500 acres. Also, we often go over to Kennebunkport, Maine for a lobster at Cape Porpoise. Maine is absolutely heaven. Would love to live there, but 9 months of winter(3 to prepare, 3 actual, 3 to clean up) is too much for these tired old joints.

In the archives there’s a posting of someone who did exactly what you plan to do, i.e., not use it until judging. The ceramic on his lighter broke and jammed during judging and shorted, frying his wires. So, your plan is good … until it isn’t.

                        Gary
Yup, like what happened to me driving 100 miles to the Regional in '08 when my lighter fried because the just got but never tested it NOS element was the wrong one(long vs short). I couldn't fix it in time and lost big points for non-function, wrong element, burned wire underdash, cooked under-cluster housing, etc.

Then a dead brand new out of the box Repro T3(I paid dearly for) outer headlamp high beam element.

These just knocked me out of 2nd Flight(which I was hoping for), on my '59. It had a '61 Dual WCFB 270HP with original assembly stamp pad and vin stamp, perfectly matched ancillaries, but lost all points for it. I knew that upfront of course. The judges loved the engine though as all the dates fit right in line with it's original car. I found the original car the engine came from 28 years ago but the guy had just restored it with a replacement engine and didn't want the original engine.

I knew it wouldn't ever top flight but a 2nd flight? I'd have been elated getting that. Darn Lighter got me the worst. I'm still mad at myself when I think about it.

Peter I don't have a history but another friend of mine and his wife restored it many years ago(Muller Boatworks, Bo & Cathy Muller, Sunapee, NH) I'll ask him next time I talk to him. It went through Auction in 2019, Here.

I do know that a few years ago it won Best-In-Class at a big ACBS event somewhere, maybe Tahoe I forget.

Bo & Cathy restored this one below years ago also.... Baby Bootlegger, Gold Cup winner in the mid 20's. Poor video. Nice boat. Has its original Hispano-Suiza V8 which was rebuilt.

Peter, I talked to Bo Muller this morning about Gypsy's history. The boat went through the Mecum auction in 2019(click), didn't sell, but sold on consignment later back up in NH. I'll send you a PM or Email later with all of the details. Bo restored it 15 years ago, and did some upgrades after it went to the present owner 5 years ago, so some photos from auction will be different, particularly the floors. Bo did those checkerboard/perforated laminations, mainly to help the bilges breathe.

A follow up on the fuse adapter project.

Remember my search for 0.115" pins for creating the Version 2 adapters for the reproduction lighters.

These. Their OD is 0.126 and I thought it may work. I found a small pin, 0.126" in diameter in my misc pile of bits and tried to insert it into the stock power connector in the Main harness. It did not.
                                XHF_AC_SL1200_resized_.jpg

Back to the drawing board again. I got wrapped with other tasks and finally got back to the search, for days. Finally I decided to go to my Napa to check the shelves over. No luck, then I showed what I needed for the pin to the store manager. He looked at his catalogs and we perused through through them and found a few candidates. We then went back to the shelves and found several pins but not the right size, too small, Then we found a female pin with a OD that looked like it might work. I had my caliper with me. The OD is precisely 0.115" diameter, matching the lighter housing barrel pin. This is it - Napa #725171.
                                725171_resize.jpg
I test fit several in my Auveco female clips and the fit was perfectly snug. This morning I went ahead and made up a adapter with the Auveco female clip and the Napa pin and tested it several times. It worked fine.
                                Newpin_09.jpg

Technically, this will work for either the original or the reproduction 1963 to 1966 lighters.
