Shifter stalk wiggle

My 69 shifter stalk has some wiggle between the stalk and the lower square section. I do not weld but have a friend who does. Do you think a spot weld of sorts is the best fix? Any guidance I should give him if so??

I think I'd go with a new shifter assembly. Excellent reproductions are available.

Keith - Back about a dozen years or so, I decided to start taking my cars out to the Wednesday Night Drags at Sears Point Raceway (Norcal) and after a while, I noticed the same slopiness (sp) in the factory Muncie shifter handle. With side exhaust it was easy to remove the shifter assembly and I found the same thing, the upper round shifter barrel had gotten a bit loose from the lower squared section. I cleaned it off and added a couple decent welds to it and it's been fine ever since. The boot covers the welded area so it's not visible.
