Original finish for M20 shift levers?

The reverse shift lever on my 1970 M20 is natural steel that's mostly painted black on one side (shown) and only partly black on the other. I know the transmission was removed at least once in its past for clutch work and new seals, but I believe otherwise left alone...but you never know.

How were these originally finished? Same question for the 1-2 and 3-4 levers.

Thanks Joe. I thought the unpainted areas were natural, but perhaps it's a worn, old grey phosphate. Hard to tell.
