    C3 Engine and transmission r&r

Does anyone know if you can remove the engine and Muncie transmission as a unit while leaving the frame mounted shifter in place? The shift rods would be removed of course.

Bob -- Do you mean with the shifter in place or just with the engine and trans as a unit?

Patrick are you going back to the LT1?
Or other maintenance issues with the ZL1 going back in?

I cannot recommend anything other than a M20 with the 3.55's.
Even if you drop the gear set in the original M21 case.
In this case the M20 gets you the same effective first gear ratio as your old 4.11.
BUT with a 3000rpm 60 mph cruise of the 3.55.
                3.55 x 2.52 M20= 8.946
                8.946 / 2.20 = 4.06
To get a better effective first gear ratio with a M21 or M22 you would need a 4.11
I had two 69 Z28's both with 4.10's and M20's from the factory... if your buddy had a car with a M21 3.73 he would think there was something wrong with his car. The M21 would require a 4.66 gear to match a M20 4.10.

My Green LT1 has 3.55 M20 combo and it is so great to drive around, 2nd gear is long, makes driving the solid lifter engine around pretty easy..
The Black LT1 has 3.70 M21 and I am considering putting a M20 gear set in the original case.
