    GMAC Archives

    Good evening,

I have documentation on my 1968 Corvette indicating that it was first financed through GMAC. Has anyone ever had any success
contacting GM for GMAC archival retail financing information?

    Thank you

GMAC (General Motors Acceptance Corporation) was spun off by GM many years ago. GM has had no involvement in it for years. About 5 or 6 years ago GMAC filed for bankruptcy and was liquidated. So, I doubt that any records such as you seek even exist today.

      Donald,

In the summer of 2020 I was the executor of an estate that included many cars. One of them was registered in the state of residency but the title was still in the name of the original lien holder from the early 2000’s– GMAC. In order to be able to sell the car, it was necessary to get a notarized letter from GMAC releasing their interest in the car. I contacted either GMAC or Ally Financial by phone and was able to secure the letter of release. You could try contacting either of them by phone and checking to see exactly what paperwork they have available to you.

Just one opinion, but I believe the GMAC Financing on the bottom of some documents reflects how the DEALER was paying for the car.
I'm pretty confident you would see financing notations, even if the vehicle was being ordered for Dealer Stock/Inventory.
(if you were trying to do a reverse search for the original owner, I'm doubtful it would help)

NOTE: Some dealers may even have paid via CA$H, so NO financing would be observed.
Others could have had local bank financing... several different possibilities.
Perhaps some people have differing knowledge or opinions...

Jack: From my notes from Al Grenning's Seminars the holy grail as Al would call it >"Wholesale Invoice"
did show who actually bought the car(1st money exchange) and it did indeed show GMAC as shown to us.
The Wholesale Invoice showed all pertinent info like model/options/and etc.. One copy of the Wholesale
Invoice was sent to that 1st party that sent the payment in. (GMAC) I have a copy of this for one of my
cars that was bought by the original owners uncle's bank. Has the bank name on the copy. FYI Thanks

Larry- Apologies for not being clear. I was referencing the more common Car Shipper document... where GMAC, along with a 4-digit number, are typically found towards the bottom. Not sure what client would be billed for 'GMAC 0000' (as seen on a few documents with different dealers), nor would I believe itz a sequential customer number (as they sold more cars than the digits allowed).

Since we don't know the document in question, it seemz like we are just speculating.

              Re: GMAC Archives

Thank you to those who responded to my previous submission regarding GMAC. I did email a GM archival website and received a reply indicating that they did have vehicle invoices beginning in 1977. I also contacted Ally Financial and was advised that GMAC records were no longer available.

                Re: GMAC Archives

If GMAC is listed on the shipper document that likely indicates the dealer had the car on floor plan with them. The vast majority of dealers float their inventory expense through their finance company commonly called floor plan and pay each month. Today's invoices also show the floor plan finance company on the bottom.
