GM of Canada Documentation for Corvettes Originally Sold in Canada

A discussion of GM of Canada documentation broke out in Sando Covello's thread titled "63 window sticker". In order to avoid further highjacking of his thread and to make the material more accessible, I am starting a new thread for us to continue the discussion.

Commenters to the previous thread provided a link to Vintage Vehicle Services that seems to possess the GM of Canada data that once was available directly from GM of Canada.

I got information about my 67 Corvette in 1989, directly from GM of Canada. Back then, you could correspond with a GM employee named Larry Davidson, and the letter was on "General Motors of Canada Limited" letter head. The source material was something called the Monthly Imported Shipping report. To GM of Canada, Corvettes were imported cars. I guess GM in US did not save their corresponding monthly exported shipping report or anything else. It seems possible that
when Larry Davidson retired there was no one in GM to do this great service, and Vintage Vehicle Services took it over. Its a good thing that they did.

Keep in mind that GM of Canada only had information on Corvettes that were sold new in Canada because the import records were the data source. In 1967 model year, there were only 336 Corvettes sold new in Canada. I know that because Noland Adams published the number of 67 Corvettes with option V48 as 336. All the 67 Corvettes imported to Canada had option V48 which was just a richer mixture of antifreeze.

Attached are pictures of what GM of Canada sent me, amazingly for free. There was a very brief cover letter from Larry Davidson followed by the substantive second page shown here. He also sent me the Monthly Imported Shipping report for March 1967 that showed options, production date and other stuff for my car and 26 others shown here. The type is pretty small and I don't expect it to be legible. But if you own 67 Corvettes numbered: 11947, 11966, 11998, 11999, 12231, 12250, 12652, 12770, 12810, 12875, 12839, 12967, 13114, 13228, 13332, 13494, 13495, 13501, 13510, 13814, 13817, 13938, 14508, 14518, 14564 or 14718 I have your information.

Please post information about what you got from Vintage Vehicle Sevices or the old stuff like I got here. Maybe we can combine to get a list of all the 336 Canadian Corvettes.

    Thanks Patrick, great stuff !

Did GM of Canada use different paint codes than the U.S. ?
I've never seen "HH Mountain Green Metallic" for a '67...

WOW - VERY highly optioned car, eh...

Also, were there no V48-optioned cars delivered in the U.S. ?

    Thanks for sharing !
    thx,
    Mark

HH code was a Fisher body color code for Mountain Green. but its more of medium green, not dark like Goodwood

The paint was actually Goodwood Green. They just called it Mountain Green. I hope someone has a Canadian order form or catalog to see if they had different names for other colors.

There was nothing different about the car except for the richer antifreeze mixture. I think all the V48 cars went to Canada. There were 27 Corvettes in this monthly import count. Twelve times 27 is pretty close to the total V48 production of 336. I will check the 1967 order forms to see if V48 is listed in the US. I am thinking it was just an automatic adjustment for Canada like the bilingual warrantee books and plastic protectoplates.

          Interesting,

So I guess the computer jockeys back then didn't think it was worth while programming in 1967 Corvette 3-character numbered paint codes for their printouts. Maybe they only allotted 2 spaces for the paint codes, so they had to enter "something close". I wonder how they handled the 3 different shades of Corvette blues in '67 ?

V48 does not appear on any of the Corvette Order forms I have seen, but not sure if GM of C forms were different ?
          thx,
          Mark

On occasion we see Shipping Data Reports that indicate zone 21-000. As we understand it this is the code to indicate the car was sent to a dealer in Canada. In later years this code was changed but the SDR will indicate a Canada delivery vehicle. See the website link here for info and contact details.

In the C3 era the code for Canadian shipped cars also included an extra dose of fuel un order to get the car through customs. I wish I could recall where I got this information. I am going to make inquiries of come folks with Canadian delivered cars to see if I can hunt that down.

In more recent times GM of Canada didn't provide the monthly report Patrick has. Thay just provided the cover letter, but I recall seeing that monthly report back when I was 1970-72 Team Leader.

They stopped supplying the microfiche sheet copy when complaints were lodged over the fact that there was too much info for other cars being supplied - like vins and key codes. Many rare cars where located using those sheets!

Re: GM of Canada Documentation for Corvettes Originally Sold in Canada

Mark— to your point, I met someone who found and acquired a 1970 ZR1 using his collection of the Canadian monthly imported shipping reports. In fact he found me the same way. He had a friend who had been a GM employee in Canada in 1967 and got a new car every year at a big discount. His friend described the 67 Corvette he had bought back then, and this fellow contacted me out of the blue to tell me he thought he knew who the first owner of my car was. I was stunned that a stranger from Canada emailed me with this information. He as right. His friends name was in my warrantee book. He said my car was the only one in his Canada shipping reports that matched his friends description of his old car. His friend had it only until the 69 Corvettes were available. Apparently 68 Corvettes were in such demand that GM employee discounts were not available, and he had to wait until the 69s for his next discount Corvette.

To the other Mark— the tank sticker for this car lists the zone as 21 and the dealer as 000 just as you predicted. Also, the tank sticker lists the name of the actual dealer, Desjardins Auto Ltd in this case.

                    Patrick,
i couldn't resist digging out some of my old paperwork I haven't looked at in years. Attached are 5 sheets of approximately 133 - 67 Cdn Delivered units that I assembled while searching for my old 67 L71 #10883 that I sold in 1968. I started this search very early 80's and was concentrating on only L-71 cars like I had. Hard to see are the DOTS Representing 23 L71's. These are photocopies but the sheet with #10883 is the original microfiche sent by GM George Zapora. He still provides this form of service he took with him into retirement. IMG_4894.jpg believe early 90's GM changed there policy and started to make these packages 1 LINE only and with no key codes and Charged a nominal fee.
