Question on installation of '69 spare tire carrier

    Guys,

I'm installing the spare tire carrier on my '69 and I have a question about the placement of the hardware. Looking at the AIM it looks like the nut that is place on the front bolts is placed UNDER the carrier, but I'm wondering if that isn't correct. The nuts I have for my front bolts are barely larger than the hole in the carrier brace, but there is no flat washer indicated for that area as per the AIM. I'm starting to think that the nut and lock washer are both placed on the front bolts ABOVE the carrier and help lock the front bolts to the frame, and then the carrier actually rests on the head of the front bolt. See attached pics and thanks for any info you can provide on this. If anyone has a pic of an installed tire carrier focusing on these bolts that would be really appreciated.

Re: Question on installation of '69 spare tire carrier

Ha, I've never noticed that before. I'm wondering if the original nut is small enough to fit through the hole. It's been a long time since I've installed one, so I don't remember. The carrier has to hang on the large flat ends of the bolt. I never understood the need for the lock nut but I guess it allows for adjusting the length of the bolt to accommodate small variations in tire width.

I apologize for the incorrect rotation of the photo but I don't see any way to adjust it. It displays correctly on my computer.

You will need to feed the bolt through the spare tire carrier, then screw the nut on. Slide the lock washer down, the start the bolt into the frame.
See attached picture. If you only knew how hard it was to turn the car sideways to get this picture.

        Floyd,
That's a good question. Not to muddy the waters (because you and Gary have given Michael the pictures and advice he needs)...the C2 didn't use the lock nut...just the washer. I'd be interested in understanding the need for the nut myself. Picture of my '67.

68's used 7" wide wheels. 69 thru 82, the wheels were 8" wide. The nut is "about" a 1/2" wide, cheaper than making a new die for the bolt?
          Just my opinion....

Thanks guys for your help. Makes perfect sense. I figured the AIM was just incorrect. Wouldn't be the first thing I discovered that was incorrect during my restoration.
