    c1 Differential Leak

I have a leak coming from the differential in my 58. It looks like it is coming from the diff drain plug. I noticed that the plug didn't have a gasket. I ordered 2 gaskets for the differential plugs. The gasket fit the filler plug just fine but was too big for the drain plug. I searched all over the place and don't see anyone selling a c1 or 1958 gasket for the drain plug.

Was there even a gasket for the diff drain plug? If yes, where can I order one or make one?

    Thanks,
    Jason

Can you post a picture of the drain plug you have?

Here is a pic of the plug installed in the diff. I guess I can remove it and have all the fluid drain out to take a pic of the actual threads of the plug.

Does anyone know if the bottom drain plug on a C1 requires some kind of gasket? I am thinking it must since the fill plug has one.

Going from memory, the fill plug is leather and the drain plug is copper. Buy your self a small kit of copper washers (Amazon or any good auto parts store) and you will be all set.

          FWIW
          , I agree with Dennis. However my Oct. 1972 P&A 30 B group 5.400 p/n 3921989 , gasket drain screw (1/2” I.D x15/16” O.D) -(1.456)
          Same group p/n 3923420 screw,drain (1/2”-20 x 13/16”)-(1.453
group 1.456. Gasket, oil pan drain screw 3921989 (nylon 1/2” I.D. X 29/32”O.D. , group 1.453 provides the same info as group 5.400 about the plug. So the Chevrolet publication counterdicts itself on the size of the gasket.
As I mentioned above, I agree with Dennis, as I firmly believe my 61 has a copper gasket on the differential drain. Been too many years and beers since I changed the oil in it. Guess I should put that on my winter project list.

I am aware of what is in the Chevrolet P&A book. In the 58-62 judging guides we haver copper washers listed. Earlier this year, while reviewing potential revisions for the next round of updates with the 2 team leaders and a knowledgeable previous team leader, we discussed this issue.

The consensus was that we were not going to change the judging guide. None of us had ever seen anything but copper on known original rear end drain plugs.

The thought here was that Chevrolet may be stocking nylon over the counter, however, the rear end was delivered assembled to the factory by the vendor. We believe the vendor was supplying copper washers.
