    69 Speedo Cable at Transmission

I've removed both dash panels and the upper dash to apply peel and stick insulation everywhere. While that is all out I figured I might as well replace the speedo and tach cables (both original). The threads I've seen here mostly relate to the dash end of the cables, but my question is about the end at the transmission. I have the 4 speed trans and one piece cable. The car is on jack stands so I'll have to be on my back to attempt this project. Of course the exhaust pipes are in place so access to the cable fitting is very tight. If I remove the transmission mount bracket will that allow my medium size hand (with pliers) to get to the fitting? If yes, am I correct in assuming that this end of the trans will have to be supported? Or is there some other way to access the fitting?

Of course if I get the cable out I'll know what length I need, but I'm curious why some suppliers offer 70" and/or 72".

    Thanks folks,
    Mike

    Mike,
Can't help with the removal on a C3, but I can recommend the best (and, only) place you need to consider for both the speedometer and tachometer cables...Made in USA.

Thanks for the reply Leif. At that website I can't find a path where I can actually search for my cables. If I click on the "Cables and Adapters Website" link my McAfee Web Advisor notifies me that this might be an unsafe site (https://www.speedometercablesusa.com/). Is that the target you're recommending?

I have no issues with the web page. I would just give them a call and tell them exactly what you need...they make everything in house. 888-907-6506

          Michael,
By transmission mount bracket do you mean the rubber mount?
The transmission shouldn't lower any farther down than the crossmember.

            Justin,
The part I was referring to is what some call the transmission mount bracket...the bracket between the rubber mount and the crossmember. That's now a moot point.

After sliding further under the car and re-orienting my body I was able to get my hands in the right place to remove the cable. Turns out the fitting was only finger tight, so no pliers needed. I now have the cable totally out of the car. Actually appears to be in good shape - no damage to the outer "case" and the inner shaft turns freely. I think I'll just remove the inner cable for inspection, cleaning and relubricating if all still looks good.

I've decided against replacing due to "out of stock" with my usual sources or higher than common pricing with other sources. Of course I might change my mind after removing the shaft.

In case anyone is interested, the length is 72". I don't think 70" would work unless rerouted from the factory path.

If you do need to replace the cables then definitely use the outfit Leif recommended. I had problems with every cable I purshased from the usual vendors. The inner cable was too short for the size of the outer cable, which led to disengagement from both the tach and speedo and failure to work. The tach cable then fractured completely. After Leif made the same recommendation to me I used them and the cables work perfectly.

Can't find anywhere on that site info on finished cables by application...just raw components to build them. Sent them an email.
                thanks
