Revision of the 1978-79 TIMJG is Underway: Team Needs...Members & Corvettes

A major revision is underway for the 1978-79 TIMJG and a revision team is being formed to undertake the technical review and analysis of each section. This will be the 4th edition for the 1978-79 TIMJG. A goal has been set to complete this work by May 1, 2024.

This invitation is for both members with sectional knowledge of the 78-79 years, along with owners of a 1978-79 Corvette. Above all else, we need members with the curiosity to delve into the detail of 78/79 production and learn how their car confirms or differs from that of other members, as well as to what is to become new guidance for the 1978-79 TIMJG.

In general and to round out the team, we are looking for a mix of the following:

    • Sectional knowledge and experience (i.e., interior, exterior, mechanical, chassis)
    • A 78 or 79 vehicle that is characteristic of running model changes (changes mid-year like from 3 rear compartments to two in 79).
    • A 78 or 79 with few options (like chrome mirrors, radio delete, L48 M20s, etc.).
    • Members with digital camera skills and access to a unique 78 or 79 Corvette.
    • Members with skills of proof reading for technical documents.
    • Technical skills, (computer use, tech board, upload/download files, etc.).

To date, the 78-79 team has had wide-ranging experience with judging and study of 1978 highly-optioned special editions, both RPO B2Z Silver Anniversary and the Z78 Pace Car. Thus the emphasis on coupes, both years will be to incorporate Corvettes with low-run options, such as base chrome mirrors, fixed mast antenna, non A/C, standard windows, non-tilt-tele, etc., even a trailer package (RPO ZN1) or two!

For questions, contact Team Leader Brian Pearce or Tom Russo, manual coordinator. If interested in serving on the revision team, contact Tom Russo hunt4cleanair@earthlink.net

          Tom:

I'm willing to help in any way that I can. I am the first and only owner of a 1979 Corvette; it is silver with oyster leather interior and all original with 17,400 miles. The car recently achieved four (4) stars in Bowtie judging at the French Lick National and, while I am hardly an expert, I would like to participate in the TIMJG update to learn more. Thanks for the opportunity.

Not sure if I can help much, but would be willing to be called on if needed. I have a '78 SA L82 with 5000 miles (very late build car, last few days of production) and it has been sitting in a garage for the last 42 years. I plan on starting to take it through Bowtie and do Benchmark judging on it next year. Let me know if I can help.

I'm not sure we can have an extremely frequent poster (over 6k) and only half the years as a member than I...of course I'm being virtually sarcastic but sounds like your 78 would be a great segway model to 79. One question I have, and have seen only one...is your gas cap? Is it plated or is it the 79 plastic cap?

It is plated, with a part number 559346 stamped in it. According to the built sheet I found under the jack in the jack compartment, the car has an 08-10 build date associated with it.

The revision progresses but still in need of a few more study vehicles. For example, it would be good to include 79s with the cloth interior. While leather was the most frequently ordered, cloth was unique and worthy of study.

Tom, my neighbor of 50+ years has a 79 that he bought new. It has 4000 miles and the last time it was driven was when I drove it across the street to my house so I could fix the leaking calipers.
Its Black w/black interior. And I can find out the rest of its options. Jerry is not a NCRS member but he will let me use it for this project.

Scott...sounds great! Yeah, find out the options, or lack of. Sounds in great shape. What we need are high-res images of 79 features.
