Re: 58 Muncie Install Help
Then if that is correct, you DO NOT WANT them. They will not drop the rear of a Muncie low enough. For a Muncie into a 56-62, you need to have some kind of a 1in drop spacer, such as in my picture above.- Top

"Now, as an added comment, as well as a (personal) dig at NCRS in general, these kinds of issues and comments were strongly frowned upon and nearly forbidden by the NCRS old guard-------------------some of which still exist. I've been a member since the late-70s, but rarely participate here just because of that!"
TOM: After reading the comment above, I feel compelled to respond. When I owned a modified '61 Vette, I loved reading your helpful responses to those owners/individuals needing technical assistance. Even after I switched back to C2s, I still enjoyed reading your very informative and helpful posts. You are one of a handful of NCRS members/experts that I will always review their posts to learn more about Corvette topics, issues, and problem resolutions. I am truly sorry that you have limited your participation due to "the NCRS old guard;" and I implore you to continue posting information on modified C1 Corvettes. I have owned several "modified" Corvettes over the years, and not having a lot of innate mechanical aptitude, have relied heavily on experts such as yourself to help me with my understanding, as well as guidance on the successful completion of my projects. As far as the "NCRS old guard," I will happily sing them one of my favorite USAF hymns.Rob

Re: 58 Muncie Install Help
8 of those shims would have to be purchased to get the one-inch drop. You are talking of a cost of close to $70. Does anybody have a dimensional drawing of this shim. I have 1/4 steel stock kicking around left over from one of my projects and would be able to make these shims pretty easily. I have a Muncie in my 59. Somebody made a rear trans. mount, but never lowered the cross member.- Top

Re: 58 Muncie Install Help
It does not matter what is used, that is totally insignificant.
The important thing is to drop the transmission cross member DOWN from the frame X-member 1in.
Heck a stack of washers could be used to achieve the 1in drop.- Top

Re: 58 Muncie Install Help
Tom. I was looking at the C1 Restoration Guide by Nolan Adams. There is an illustration of a 1962 4 speed with the adaptor bracket. The spacer between the frame and rear cross is only .146-.166 in thick. Why do you think that this spacer is so much thinner than 1 inch?- Top

Re: 58 Muncie Install Help
Hey Tom, I bought the correct yoke for the muncie but now I realize that the u-joint I had in the driveshaft will not work with the new yoke. The new yoke's hole are bigger in diameter so I need to get a different u-joint.
You wouldn't by chance know the part number for the u-joint that would connect the muncie yoke with the 58 Corvette driveshaft?
TIA,
Jason- Top

Re: 58 Muncie Install Help
WHAT???????????????????????????
I don't think that's right!!!!!!!!!!!!
The 62-earlier transmissions had a tail shaft and yoke with coarse 16splines. The 63-70 PG, Muncies, T-350s, 3spds, etc had a tail shaft and yoke with fine 27splines. BUT BOTH STYLES had the same size U-joint holes. TO THE BEST AS I CAN REMEMBER, only the T-400 and 71-later Muncies and Super T-10 had a larger 32spline tail shaft and yoke. Those used a larger U-joint.
Not being able to see what your have, I cannot say for sure, but I'm guessing you received the wrong yoke!
Just round up a good used 63-later yoke such as for a T-350, PG, etc.- Top

Re: 58 Muncie Install Help
All Corvette Driveshaft from 1953 to 1962, and 1963 to 1970 use a Spicer 1310 series U-joint. That yoke you have is for a 1350 U-joint. See the Universal Joint Style spec from the Summit listing.
Corvette driveshaft from 1971 to 1982 use a Spicer 1330 series U-joint.
Corvette half shafts from 1963 to 1982 use a Spicer 1350 series U-joint.
If one wanted a stronger U-joint and custom driveshaft, they could increase the U-joint size.

Re: 58 Muncie Install Help
That's about right. It will work fine. Of course, if you wanted, you could use a 1in square alum bar stock. Cut it to length and drill the holes. The important thing is to drop the cross member 1in.- Top
