Opinions Sought. Added Power Steering On A 1963 340 HP Car

A friend has a 63 convertible, 340 HP car. He added Chevrolet/GM/Corvette power steering to the car 35 or more years ago. He's now thinking of having the car judged. He asked my opinion about deductions... I have an opinion, and came up with a number.

I'd like to get others' opinions.

The oil pan was changed, the crank/WP pulley were changed, the alternator pulley was changed, the PS pump, brackets and extra belt were added, etc. Of course, we have the extra PS items in/on the steering linkage..

    Thoughts?

Since nobody has jumped on my question so far, I came up with between 40 and 60 points to be deducted, using CDCIF. I have not seen the car for decades. I have seen a few photos.

On several items that come to mind, side exhausts and Vintage Air, there are rather standard deductions for those items.

Chuck I am going to assume the engine suffix is original and coded for a 340hp and he will be presenting as such?

Why not try concours stock judging? It may come down to a Blue Ribbon in Concours vs a Red Ribbon In Flight judging. I would go the Concours

            I've been thinking about this:

            • I do not recall seeing a standard deduction on this.
            • I assumed the Chassis Team spoke with the Mechanical Team as to not double-dip on the pulleys.
            • I assumed all the P/S parts are Corvette parts.
            • I assumed all the parts are in excellent condition.

            Saying that:

            • The oil pan is worth 8 points, 20% hit on Configuration, - 1.6 points, round to 2 points.
            • All the P/S parts are worth 8 points, a 40% hit on Configuration and Installation, - 3.2 points, round to 3 points.

Looks like a 5 point hit, What did I miss?

Gary, the one place I did not look, Yep 16 points. Then the 2 for the oil pan. Everything else as I recall is the same. So 18 points.

And No, P/S could not be ordered in 63 on a 340 or 360 hp car.

If detected, added power steering is explicitly mentioned in the Judging Reference Manual in Section 4, Standard Deduction…, sub-section 9. Added or Deleted Options. “The detectable addition…of any regular production vehicle option subsequent to factory assembly is … subject to a full deduction on originality and condition. Examples: … power steering…” So, at a minimum, I assume this means the 8 pts for originality and 8 for condition on the Chassis line item “Power Steering: pump, pulleys…” So, 16 points there. And what about any associated items that might have changed or altered, like the steering column, rag joint, steering box, steering damper. It could add up to a fair amount. Unless everything is done so as to be undetectably different from an original power steering car.

Was it even possible to order power steering on a ‘63 340 HP car? That question shows my ignorance about ‘63s in general.

no it was not available due to the larger five quart oil pan and interference with linkage

Even if the point deduction were as high as 45, in the grand scheme of thing that is not but a 1% off of the raw score, leaving you with a 99% if everything else is perfect.
