    69 points metal guard

I was curious if the original 69 non TI cars had the metal two piece points guard under the distributor cap?

I would write NO or nope, but the program tells me that is too few words.

That thing you are talking about is called an RFI shield and it started being installed around #12,00 in 1970 model year. it went along with the smaller 1971 style distributor shield.

The shields are also found on SERVICE distributors of the original part numbers manufactured after about 1971 for 1962-69 Corvette applications. Of course, all of those distributors are long-since discontinued from SERVICE but there are undoubtedly many still out there in cars.

The shield must be removed whenever "Uniset" type point sets are installed. For point type distributors I highly recommend the use of "Uniset" type points. They are the only type I have used for over 50 years.

Interesting. So the type of external shield over the distributor indicates whether there's an internal points shield?

So long as you disregard the cars built right around the change point, the answer is yes, not all of the pieces were changed at exactly the same time. That is some cars may have distributers with the RDI shield and the larger shielding right around the change point or not have it with the small shield. Remember the distributer was installed on the engine assembly plant and the shielding at St Louis. I doubt anyone in St Louis looked in the distributer to see if the RFI shield was installed, but that is speculation on my part.

Thanks guys, at Carlisle I bought a RFI shield from a buddy but we were not positive if correct for a 69 or not.

Joe, that is great info about the service units. And yes I agree I use Uniset points as well.

Just to follow-up on this, my Sep 69 built L-46 appears to me to have the original distributor, with a red id band on it that I do not believe would be there if it had been replaced, but it has what I believe has been described as the two piece points shield under the cap. Is this correct or is something amiss? Is Sep 69 close enough to the changeover that it could be correct for my car? Sorry just realized that the changeover occurred from 70-71 not 69-70 so I'm guessing the RFI shielding is not correct for my car.

What's the date code on the ID band? However, even if it seems correct for the car, the band could easily have been transferred from the original distributor to another. Later SERVICE distributors of the original part number included the internal shield.

By the way, my original distributor on my September 1969 small block definitely did not include the shield.
