    1963 1100628 Alternator

I wanted to get comments on the date stamping on this 628 alternator I bought years ago. The #3 in the date looks like a 8 with the side ground off and with a date of E (May) I wonder when the front case stamping started on these parts. I remember something about the date stamp being rolled over the surface because it's rounded.

I also wanted to show the rear case and the 6 rectangular slots with the 1/4" hole and the thick red washer to accept the wire boot. Did the thicker red washer appear when the rear case changed from the early rear case. I don't think this alternator has ever been apart, I forgot I even had it downstairs.

As I recall that alternator is from a passenger car. The hole in the rear is to hold the passenger car harness.

Leif, the pics you posted are for a March built 628 with the early rear case and flat red washer. The 628 I have pictured is a May built alternator showing the later case with the hole.

Harry, I can't believe the passenger car had a different rear case than Corvette but with the same part number. My feeling is that this change took place somewhere around the May date time frame and this rear case (1/4" hole) was used on Corvette's also. I know this has been discussed before and many posters report the same rear case on their 628's and yes this is from a passenger car but I did not think it made a difference

FWIW, the #3 when looking close (the picture does not do it justice) is a #8 with the left side removed.

        I appreciate any comments.
