    1970 Restoration Battery R79S

I'm going to have my car judged in the near future. I was going to pay the crazy price for a Repro battery but can't even find one. What is everyone doing? I now hear you can get points by using a certain modern delco battery. I need all the points I can get.

There is a standard deduct of 50% for having a modern A/C Delco battery of the correct size and configuration. I would not waste the money on a reproduction battery--just my 2 cents

I certainly agree if Ican get half the points! Do you or someone else know which model battery will get me the max points?

Bob, I think the changed the deduction for Delco replacement batteries? Maybe some came comment . It was less of a deduction I believe.I just found it in last restorer, modern Delco battery is now 25 percent.

I would recommend an AC Delco 78VPG or 78VGHR140. As a bonus, either of these has a 42 month free replacement warranty. You don't get that with reproduction batteries.

            Bob,

I came back from the Rochester Regional with my 70. That had a group series 78 Delco in it. It took a 5 point deduction of the 21 available. Hope that helps.

That certainly is not a bad hit.

AFAIK the only battery which takes ZERO points is an original or NOS Delco.

The NOS delco I bought for judging back in 2018 was still sealed, I punched the wax seals, poured in acid, and it has been starting my car since 2019. I bought an interstate to use for everyday driving... it died after 2 years.

                  Jim,

Have you been able to convince the judger your battery is NOS?

I know people who have hollowed out their factory assembly line (different than NOS) battery and had animated and useless discussions with judges over the authenticity of the battery.

Last 2 flight judgings the car was in prior to Star Judging was a Regional and National which the car lost no points on the battery, caps, or hoses.
IMHO it is pretty easy to tell it is not a reproduction.
