1958 Steering Knuckle/Spindle Paint Color

I read in the 1958-60 Corvette Restoration Handbook that the front steering spindle/knuckle was painted semi-gloss black. I found another post on this forum that listed out all the paint colors for a restoration and it said that they were unpainted.

I have seen pictures of both but I am wanting to know which is correct.

Should they be painted semi-gloss black?

I would think the factory would have painted them with chassis paint, which was tar based and went on with a semi gloss plus finish. I used Dupont chassis black in the 70s, was shiny at first, then went to semi gloss. I used gasoline to clean the parts, a real fire hazard for sure. The zerks were left natural. The complete front end assembly, brake drums etc was painted before installation. Attaching hardware was unpainted. This unit was then installed in the chassis then brake lines etc added.

I would suggest you look in the 1958 - 1960 Judging Manual. If you don't have one check out the NCRS store.
