1963 AFB 3461S Jets and Metering Rods

1963 AFB 3461S Jets and Metering Rods, dated CG3

Gents and Ladies, I know the Jets and Metering Rods in my backup AFB are incorrect.

Incorrect Jets are 2@120-155 and 2@120-104.
Incorrect Two Metering Rods are 16-60.

Anyone have the correct Jets and Rod numbers? I'll be looking for correct sets.

    Thank you.

This question was asked a few years ago and I don't remember the answer however I do recall that Duke provided the answer. I used the information from that thread to order new metering rods for my 3461. If you can't find it in the archives get back to me and I'll search through a large file I have with receipts.

OE jets are .104/.0689 and rods are .060/.069.

That's from memory, but the '63 Corvette Shop manual should have those dimensions and maybe the AMA specs, too.

I have a Carter data sheet with all the AFB jet/rod data... dimensions and part numbers, but I'll have to dig it out of the files... maybe tomorrow.

Duke, thank you. How do I translate that into the numbers on the rods and the jets?

The following is from a single page Carter document "AFB-AVS STEP-UP ROD & METERING JET SIZES" FORM 5460 (Revised March 1970)

Here's the data from the above document for the part numbers you reported:

            120-155 jet, .091" ID

120-104 jet... could not find a listing for this part number, check and make sure you read it right. (There is a 120-401, .101" ID)

16-60 rod... could not find a listing for this part number, check and make sure you read it right.

            3461S OE jets and rods:

            Primary/secondary jets: 120-161 (.104") / 12-228 (.0689")

Rods: 16-389 or 16-77 (both .069/060", difference in length of power step) I think the 389 is correct for the 3461S.

There's no correlation of part number to size other than jet part numbers start with 120 and rod numbers with 16.

I don't have a scanner, but I'm sure I can find one so Rich can add this single page to the database of restoration documents because it's an important document for AFB enthusiasts. I doubt if many of these dozens of different rod and jets sizes are still available, but I think Edelbrock still has some of the sizes available.

Do these specifications cover the Carter AFB 3461 carbureators for 1964? Just curious since I have a '64 equipped with a 327/300.

                  Thanks,

                  James

James, not sure. Is there anything in the 1964 shop manual?

James, my guess is yes, the specs are the same and surplus was used up until the 3721S carburetor which has slightly different primary clusters and jetting. In 1964 the Holley replaced the Carter for the solid lifter cars so the Carter jetting may be more suitable for just the 300hp engine.

I can make out the rod number, but only the 120 on the jets. The photos are okay, but maybe you can make out the second field numbers with a magnifying glass and different lighting. Report what you find.

Unfortunately, removing/installing the jets with a plain flat screwdriver knarls up the jet because of the wide slot. I'm sure Carter assemblers had a special tool that didn't damage them.

The 3461S was unique to the '63 300/340 HP engines with MT and 3460S for 300 HP with PG. For 1964 the 3721S/3720S replaced the '63 model AFBs. These were superseded by the SA and SB variants.

The '64 Corvette Shop Manual Supplement likely has the data for the original versions. The '65 Supplement has the SB data.

The changes generally leaned the calibration since the AFB was only used on the 300 HP engine in '64/'65, but the SB version increased the size of the idle jet from .035" to .037", likely to aid the transition from idle/off idle to the leaner main jetting.

Duke, better pictures, look like 155 and (184 or 84) or (194 or 94).

If you save them on your computer, then zoom it helps a bit more.

Found the following on the Carter data sheet.

                              120-155, .091"

                              120-194, .0785"
