There are three oval wiper mechanism to firewall retainers (pictured) that hold the mechanism in place and keep the grille and wiper door aligned with the fender tops. If you look at the tops of the ones pictured, each has an indentation on one end. Reproductions, which are identical otherwise, do not have those indentations. Every unmolested 70-72 I have seen have the indentations, on the top. and the indentations are not identical.
My theory: the assembly line installed the mechanism tight to the firewall, and as high as it could be. One or two blows with a chisel on the too-high retainers would bring them down and foster alignment on each end of the door and grille.
What do you think about the theory?
