    Powerglide Speedometer Housing Seal?

Does a 1965 powerglide speedometer output housing (where the cable attaches) have any type of seal on the outer surface? Mine does not, it is just the shaft end of the drive gear coming through the housing. The inner cable (with flat sides) goes into the shaft of the gear and the outer cable housing screws on the transmission housing - no seal. What prevents the fluid from going into the cable and "wicking" up to the speedometer? A friend thought there should be some type of seal in there. I hope I clearly explained my question, thanks. The part which goes into the transmission and onto which the speedometer cable nut threads is know as a FITTING. The fitting should have an o-ring seal on the outer surface which fits into a groove on the fitting. This seal was known as GM #6464903.

The fitting should have an internal seal which presses into it from the outer end. This is a tiny metal frame lip seal. It is possible that early/original fittings did not have this seal or may not have a replaceable seal. If not, replacement fittings, which are the same as that used for Muncie 4 speeds, do have the internal seal. This fitting, last available under GM #345215 is now discontinued. However, reproductions/replacements are easily available for a modest cost.

If your fitting does use a replaceable internal seal, whether currently present or not, the seal was GM #3869910 but is discontinued. However, once again, easily available in the aftermarket.
