04 Z06 pull key wait 10 seconds & service column lock

The "service column lock" started to show a few times last year and now this year I often get the "pull key wait 10 seconds". The first time I got the "pull key" one the car shut off just as I started moving which I guess is what it's supposed to do. The car has never let me down before but I was at home so no big deal...yet. My wife suggested I try the other key and it actually started fine with no messages and we went for a drive. After some Googling I was thinking the resistor in the one key was bad so I checked it and they both read the same. Now the "bad" key works fine so its not that.

I know now that there is lots of info/opinions out there on what the problem is and how to bypass this or that but does anyone really know what causes these messages that can leave you stranded and how to properly fix it? I also have read that there were several recalls that had mixed results too. As a last resort, yes I could install the LMC5 bypass but I'd really prefer to keep the car as original as possible so does anyone really know what is going on and causing these messages?

    Thanks.

I tend to agree that the BCM or maybe just the programming has a lot to do with this but the failure points and how or when they fail seems to be all over the map so who knows. Reports of battery voltage being critical are not entirely true. Mine was failing at 11.7 volts but then disconnected and reconnected the battery and everything suddenly worked fine...

One thing I found interesting when I called one of the GM dealers here is that there never were any steering lock related recalls for my VIN. Its a February car so maybe they figured the issues were all sorted by then, who knows. Anyways its working properly now so I'll let it be. If it does become an issue I'll try to repair it properly so that the steering lock still works and not just bypass it.
