69 PS Control Valve to Relay Rod

Any guidance for connecting the power steering control valve to the relay rod? I see nothing in the AIM or service manual as to how far to screw to valve onto the rod. Seems like the valve should go as far as possible onto the rod and achieve proper alignment of the valve stud into the pitman arm (45 f#). Then tighten the bolt on the valve at the rod (25 f#).

The relay rod is now connected to the idler arm. Tie rods are now connected to steering arms and wheels straight forward. Of course the left tie rod only temporarily connected because it appears the control valve can't be screwed on with the tie rod in place.

Am I on the right track?

    Thanks
    Mike

Screw the PS Control Valve onto the relay road, by hand, until it won't go any farther. Unscrew it until the bolt boss faces down, parallel with the ground, and see if the screw goes in and tightens up. Usually they do.

Just one word of suggestion, as I encountered an issue when I added P/S on my '70. My AIM (N40, page A4, view B) indicates the valve assembly to be 22 degrees angled CW. I didn't pay attention to that, and I found as I was turning the steering wheel to the wheel stop, the power steering wanted to keep driving in the steered direction. Had to fight with the steering wheel. I re-angled my P/S valve assy to the indicated 22 degrees and the issue was resolved for me. It appears it is angled to that specification in order to properly align the control valve stud with the steering gear Pitman arm.

Thanks Bill for pointing that out. I was focusing on the pipe orientation and overlooked that about the valve.

Now tell me how you got it to the 22 degree precision.

I guess that one slipped by the GM Technical Publications group. The engineers with their slide rules got a little overzealous on that one!

The end of the power steering relay rod has a slot. The purpose of the slot is to tighten the power steering control valve bolt to prevent it from moving. If the control valve is not threaded enough the bolt is not going through.

Thanks for pointing this out Gary. Sometimes we overlook the obvious.
