The suffix code ID is not from a Corvette, but the lime book states it's a 67 427/425 from a passenger car (B body). however, all my 67 sales literature only list a 427/385 (L36) for the passenger car. so, was the suffix code planed for the model year and then dropped? is there any records of Tonawanda built any engines with that suffix code and what they were used for?

Re: engine suffix code ID questions
Keith,
Not sure this addresses your question, but according to the 1967 New Product Training Booklet TP-40 I have which was printed in August 1966, based on what they say for Chevrolet (above what I have boxed around for Corvette) I'm speculating "ID" should not have been available for passenger cars in 1967 (and maybe 1968 ?):
CHEVROLET
Engine availability for 1967 Chevrolet series has been reduced to five assemblies. Discontinued are the
220 horsepower, 283 cubic inch and the mechanical lifter-special camshaft 427 cubic inch, 425 horsepower engines. The hydraulic lifter 427 cubic inch V-8 has been reduced in horsepower rating to 385 from the 1966 rating of 390 horsepower. All other engines both base and optional are continued from 1966.
Note that the L36 reduced 385hp from 390hp is also listed in the Corvette section. As far as I can tell, 385hp never appeared on Corvette Dealer Order forms, but I don't have one from early in the '67 model year production to support that statement.

Re: engine suffix code ID questions
Keith, I have a Chevrolet Passenger Car parts book titled "Models Thru 1975" dated April 1983. It lists the ID code for 1966 thru 1968 and the description is "Special High Performance". Now, I know a lot of times parts books and sales materials will have items listed that never made it to production so this would not be proof positive. Also, on an episode of "Junkyard Gold", Steve Magnate featured a 68 SS Impala with the rare domed hood and mentioned it would have had to have been the 385 HP engine and not the solid lifter 425 because it had an auto trans. Car still featured the 427 badges, but the engine was gone. Still, not proof positive. Also, lots of 2 door post sedan Biscaynes/BelAirs of that era are advertised with that engine and I thought they were offered from the factory that way or maybe only by COPO for the racers. Re: engine suffix code ID questions
I have had a 66 4 bolt block with the code ID, but full-size Chevy restorers I have spoken to say that the only 427 in 67 Chevies was the 385 hp 427s with Quadrajet carbs and 2 bolt blocks.- Top

Re: engine suffix code ID questions
All------
The L-72 was available for 1966 full size Chevrolets and 1,856 were built. In fact, a couple of friends of mine bought one of these cars at an insurance salvage auction in the early 1970's.
The L-72 was not available for 1967 full size Chevrolets. However, it returned for 1968-69 full size Chevrolets. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: engine suffix code ID questions
FWIW>IIRC per John Hinckley Chevrolet Engineering requested and had production make "ONE" L72 1967Impala SS. I
forgot the purpose and do not know what happened to this car. Does anybody else recall this story?? Thanks Larry

Re: engine suffix code ID questions
Someone told me that in al Colvns Chevy by the numbers he says they made eleven 67 L72 engines with the ID suffix code. I don't have that book but where would he get that number if it is indeed in there- Top

Re: engine suffix code ID questions
My Chev P &A catalog ( Special Information & Illustration ) clearly states the engine suffix code " ID " for full size 1967 Chevrolet passenger cars with a Special High Performance 427 ( L72 ) engine. The code " IK " was also used when the engine was equipped with the AIR smog system.
The Holley carburetors used with these engines were unique to 1967 only - Holley 3910A / 3916143 with standard L72 and 3911A / 3916145 when equipped with the AIR system.
I did some research a couple of years back on the L72 engine and as I recall the low production number of eleven as stated above seems likely to me.

Engines that never made it into vehicle PRODUCTION are sometimes shown in P&A Catalogs. For example, the 1970 LS-7 never made it into 1970 Corvette PRODUCTION but it and its components are carried in P&A Catalogs for 1970 Corvettes. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: engine suffix code ID questions
If that engine was installed in a production vehicle, I find it very odd that the 1967 GM Production Trends document, has no mention.
Then again, I also have no idea why people claim to have their cat/dog 'fixed'... it was working perfectly fine, before the operation.- Top
