    Correct Starter shield

    Hi,
Would starter shield #3851295 be correct for a late 69 L46? AIM has 3959552. I had trouble finding 1295 in parts wiki...but I did find it if I did an open ended wiki search...no make, no model, no year and got a hit.

The brace in AIM is 3932398 and I have a line on that but with 1295 shield.

These two parts are difficult to source with certainty of correctness it seems.

    Keith,

The shield, 3959552 is for 64-73 Corvette, except 396, 427, & 454. Per my 53-73 Corvette parts catalog. So you need this item for your car.

The starter brace, 3932398 is for 67-69 427's, and won't work on your late '69 L46.

My car also is a late '69 L46. Even though my parts catalog shows 3816511 brace for 63-69 283, 327, and 350, I've found in other instances that 1970 parts were used on some late Corvettes, such as alternator, etc.. Part 3965589 is listed for 70-73 Corvette 350. From pics I've seen of 3965589 it looks exactly like the original on my late '69 car. Also, if you do a search of "69 L46 Starter Brace and Shield", Richard Roupe, you'll see that Joe Lucia agrees that the 3965589 will work. There are helpful pictures there as well.

Shield GM #3851295 was used for 1964-68 small blocks. It was replaced for SERVICE by the GM #3959552 in July, 1972. That's why your 1973 P&A edition shows the 3959552 for all 1964-73 small blocks.

The 3959552 was supposed to have been used in PRODUCTION starting sometime during if not the beginning of the 1969 model year. The part number also implies that time frame. However, I'm not so sure that it actually was used in PRODUCTION then. It MAY have been first used for 1970 or 1971 but I kind of doubt that. I believe it was most likely first used for 1969.

        Re: Correct Starter shield

These two parts have been very vexing to sort out and find correct originals. I have several people responding to my WTB but without part number on them it is hard to discern correctness from photos alone. But from above posts I conclude the following...if i got it right...for my Oct 69 L46.

Starter shield #3851295 is NOT correct for late 69. 3959552 IS correct and is what shows in AIM.

As for the brace...I am confused by your comment Rich about
3932398 not being correct. This number is what shows in AIM. My understanding is that parts catalogs can not always be definitive for ORIGINAL parts as the catalogs do not distinguish original vs SERVICE replacements.

          Attached are 2 photos.
Shield of left side of each photo is an original used GM 3851295. Shield on right side of each photo is a NOS 3959552 that I bought at Dobles Chevrolet (now Quirk Chevrolet) in Manchester, NH on 12/12/90 as per the Parts Plant Pick Tag. I had several of each of these shields years ago but sold all but these two. I painted the NOS shield with a "natural metal" spray paint to prevent rusting.
Both shields have a small letter "S" stamped on top of another "S".
