    c1 Rear End Painting/Sandblasting

I needing to have my 58's rear end cleaned up for painting. I haven't worked on Corvette rear ends before. I watched a video that showed how to remove the axles but I am hoping that I don't have to do anything to have the rear end sandblasted and then either powder coated or painted with POR-15.

Would it be safe to blast it without taking everything apart? If I have to take everything apart, is it a difficult process? I watched a video that showed how to use a slide hammer to pull the axles out and then with a block of wood to push them back on.

Can anyone give advice or steps to what it takes to remove everything and then the steps to put it back together?

    Thanks,
    Jason

Full details are in the 1953-62 Corvette Servicing Guide ST-12 available in the NCRS store.

      Jason,

If you're only talking about cleaning up the housing (IOW, you are not needing to rebuild it) you might consider someone who can do dry ice blasting for you while it's still in the car.

I have not done this myself, but my understanding is it is very gentle on components hit by the dry ice pellets and may not require anything to be disassembled.

Also, my understanding is that it's not cheap...but if you completely disassemble, you're probably going to want to rebuild it - which also has cost ramifications.

      Good luck !
      thx,
      Mark

        Body off or body on?

Only seen around eight C1 restored. All rear were disassembled for sandblasting, but that doesn't say it can't be done.

If disassembled, then bearing surfaces need to be protected from blasting and intrusion of media.

If disassembled, then careful cleanup of all media obviously is needed.

Good time to examine rear differential when apart. Should replace old differential mounting washers with new copper ones.

Do you plan on having this car judged? If so, then powder-coat/POR-15 will generate Originality deductions during Flight Judging.

You should familiarize yourself with NCRS' judging process so you are aware of what impact your restoration decisions will have on Judging results.

Recommend you attend Chapter/Regional/National judging events - sign-up as an "Observer Judge". Chapter meetings/Regional/National also present Judging Schools. Will be very helpful to you..

In addition to aforementioned ST-12 Corvette Servicing Guide, you should have NCRS' Technical Information Manual and Judging Guide (TIMJG) and 9th Edition Judging Reference Manual (JRM)..

TIMJG (specific to your year's Corvette) tells you WHAT to judge. JRM tells you HOW to judge.

Ok thanks. I have that and will read through it.
