1967 Rocker Panel Stamped Steel Bracket

On page 84 of the current 67 judging guide as it pertains to the stamped steel bracket for the rocker panel, it reads "The front [of the rocker molding] is attached to a stamped steel bracket that is riveted to the body fiberglass..." and picture E 16-3 shows this stamped steel bracket that appears to be dark in color.

    I have a few questions...
    1. What finish (and color) was originally used on these brackets?
    2. Are the rivets supposed to have over spray on them?
    3. Can someone please post up some pix of this bracket and the rivets so I have a good reference?

    Thanks in advance.

As you can see in the pix below, the rivets on my car do not match and it looks like someone tried to compress the black rivets with a set of pliers or something. I'd like the rivets to be congruent with each other, so I'll likely redo them so they're congruent. If you see something in these photos that does not look correct/TFP please let me know. Thanks.

    Brian,

The brackets were installed on the body before the body was painted. This is a pic of my car showing the original body color with the brackets painted the same.

The pop rivets the vendors sell are too long. Or at least the ones I got from Long Island Corvette were. And the ones in your photo are too long. You can find the correct length rivets, but you will likely have to buy more than four. I have plenty of extra rivets that are the correct length from when I re-riveted those brackets on my ‘66, but I don’t know if I can find them, and I’m on vacation until July.

            Gary

Can anyone tell me what the best (closest to OEM) size is for these rivets? Thanks in advance.

Gary, when you say the rivets are too long, are you referring to this (red box) aspect of the rivet?

                Brian,

Yes. That is the part of the rivet that determines grip length, and that is what was too long with the LIC rivets.

I took everyone's input and made some changes. Thanks to all who helped.

Before (exterior view of bracket). Bracket is supposed to be body color.

After (exterior view of bracket). Bracket NOW has body color on it.

Before (interior view of bracket)... Wrong color and rivets were too long.

After (interior view of bracket)... Notice the shorter rivets?
