69 Speedo cable retainer at back of speedo

Looking at the picture below, you can see that the clip on the tach, to retain the tach cable, fits below the housing and is therefore prevented from slipping off. However unlike the tach the speedo has a shoulder which prevents a similar retaining clip from going beyond the shoulder and being retained by the housing. Unless the speedo takes a different clip than the tach which does not appear to be the case from looking at the reproduction that's available. In any case the clip that came off my speedo is exactly the same as the one on the tach and cannot be placed such that it is retained by the housing similar to the tach. Seems odd since it's not as good of a design - believe the speedo cable and retainer could be pulled loose.

So am I correct that the retainers are the same and the one on the speedo simply does not fit behind the housing as my picture shows the one on the tach?

    Thanks,

    Jack

    Jack,

It's been a few years since I installed my dash on my 69 so I just can't remember. What I definitely can say is that I did not have any questions or doubts about the attachment of the speedo cable in terms or it's stability. What I was able to do though is look on eBay and get a pic of the back of a speedo for sale that fortuitously also still had the speedo cable attached. Obviously, if this cable and clip weren't firmly attached they would have fallen off of this sample speedo. I'm thinking you just need to figure out how it works. If you had your stuff restored you can probably call the folks who did that and they may be able to help.

Somebody who didn't know what they are doing has been inside your speedo. The same clip is used on both gauges, and is retained the same way. Your tach has the tab at the top of the opening, as it should be. Your speed needs to have the guts rotated 90 degrees counter clockwise, so the tab on it is in the same place as the tach's. The clip will then work fine. Not sure what all is screwed up inside.

Thanks to both of you for the help. I agree that the speedo guts are not oriented correctly but changing that will not affect the clips ability to go over the speedo neck that is too large in diameter. It does indicate someone probably has been into the speedo and messed things up a bit. Perhaps the person replaced that center piece with one that is slightly larger at the base? Just guessing as I'm not familiar with the speedo internals or parts. The speedo works fine and looks good so rather than mess it with anymore I enlarged the inside diameter of the clip enough that it would fit.
