    fire extinguisher for judging events

Is there any specific "approved" fire extinguisher for regional/national events? I've never had a car judged at one of these and am putting together the final things needed ( both car and otherwise) and couldn't find any specific requirement other than just a fire extinguisher. I have a 69 L46 convertible.

    Thanks,

    Rich

    Richard,
A small Halon or Halotron fire extinguisher is what you want. I have one of these tucked behind the passenger seat luggage stop wrapped with Velcro.

Any type of fire extinguisher will get you the bonus points when judging. Having said that, some are very messy, if you are ever unfortunate enough to have to use it.

I am not swsre of a size requirement, (and I did look foR it in the JRM) however I was a National Team Leader when the bonus points for NCRS decal, battery cut-off switch and fire extinguisher swas implemented. At the time thie question if fire extinguisher size was thoroughly debated. Some of that debate was on the judging field. You might imagine the circumstances under which that took place.

At that time the decision was the extinguisher had to "be of adequate size" to extinguish a modest fire. Extinguisher technology has evolved, and today depending on the material the extinguisher uses size can be deceptive.

I would suggest that to push the envelope on the lower end of the size curve is not in the owner's best interest. The purpose of an extinguisher is not to "scrape by" in judging, but to protect the car and ones investment (either in time and effort or financial) in the car. Fire extinguishers are one thing in which size does matter, Be wise and increase the size.

Thanks guys. I didn't want to be unprepared with the wrong one at judging time I will get a good one that I hope I never have to use!

Very interesting to hear the back story regarding the implementation of this bonus point. I never gave it much thought, but I have been around long enough to recognize the "fun" that must have taken place. Thanks for posting about the roll out.

My comment was based on the type of fire extinguisher, not necessarily the size. However, it did get me wondering, so I took a look in the 61-62 judging manual. In the Operations manual we indicate:

"- a portable fire extinguisher that is large enough to be effective for a car fire"

in the aviation world Halon, now replaced by Halotron, is an amazing fire extinguisher. Every airplane I have ever piloted had Halon in it for a reason. I have one in my 72 but I had the old fashioned messy ABC type before and I had to use it when a fuel line wasn't secure. Fortunately it was out in a couple of seconds. the cleanup took MUCH longer. Spend the money (Halotron isn't cheap) but it is a game changer. Do a YouTube search and watch how Halotron puts out fires. It is magic. Halon is still available (I think) but is even more expensive.

I did belong to the AACA with my Camaro's until I sold them. AACA judging standards are nowhere near
those of the NCRS. BUT>They have a requirement of having a Fire Extinguisher at all judging events present by
the car you are getting judged. To my surprise THEY CHECK VERY CAREFULLY IF THE EXTINGISHER
"IS CHARGED"(Arrow is pointed in the Green on mine). If not charged they will not judge the car. Larry

I was a volunteer firefighter during my 20s for my rural neighborhood near Tucson. Lots of car fire calls because I-10 went through our district. One night we responded to an RV fire. When we arrived, its fiberglass body was completely gone; only the chassis remained. Caused by a locked up brake. This showed me how quickly fiberglass bodies are consumed by fire.

Today I have dry chem, CO2, and Halotron extinguishers in the garage, and a Halotron in every car. My Tucson experience has made me wary of what fire can do.

BTW another advantage of Halon or Halotron with cars is that since it's a gas, it can be shot through the grille and radiator so you don't need to open the hood to fight an engine fire

Not sure how this impacts judging though. I have thought about machining the mount down a bit, but haven’t as of yet.

I have seen the Vetteworks brackets mentioned in several threads. But this is a showstopper on these for me..."They must be installed with the seat adjusted fully back and there will be no seat adjustment once the bracket are installed. " Many better options than that IMO.
