1966 Side exhaust fiberglass heat shield installation

I'm working on correcting a few things on a recently purchased 1966 w/ factory side exhaust. I noticed the fiberglass heat shields that go between the actual exhaust pipe and the outer metal shield are missing. I'm wondering how those pieces are attached. Are they mounted to the outer metal shield or are they mounted to the exhaust pipe?

Is there a diagram in an assembly manual? Is the fiberglass just screwed to the outer metal shield or is there some other special hardware involved. Any help would be appreciated. I'm having the car Flight Judged at the regional NCRS event in Rochester, MN in June and I'd like to have this issue corrected before it goes through the judging process.

    Thanks, Wayne

Welcome to the club, and to the Tech Discussion Board (TDB) Wayne..
The fiberglass inserts are called insulators.. Vendors sell them.. Here is ZIP's listing.
I think they are held in place on the covers with an adhesive of some kind.. A strong, heat resistant adhesive.

Wayne: If you search this board you will find the most common solution is "JB-Weld". Did my
66 Driver Side Last year and it is still holding. Larry P.S. Not sure what the factory used back then.

        Wayne,
I had to re-adhere my insulators a couple of years ago. I'm sure JB Weld will do the trick. I used 3M Panel Bond to do mine. Apply the adhesive to the upper and lower flat sections of the insulation that faces the metal shielding. When you have the insulators in hand and you trial fit them, you will understand exactly what I'm talking about. Have plenty of strong spring clamps on hand to hold the insulators to the shielding and let set for about 24 hours before re-installing.
Take your time and you should have no problems...a bit time consuming, especially if you've never had to remove the side covers before. Let us know if you need any helpful FYI.

Leif, Thanks for the info on how to bond the insulator to the outside cover. I am a recently retired 41 year 3M employee so I will try to "Score" some 3M Panel Bond through my co-work friends. The covers have never been off so I know what you are talking about when you say it can be time consuming.

JB weld has a fairly low maximum temp, maybe the back side of the fiberglass is cool enough. I used a high temp black RTV from McMaster that is good to 400*. Sounds like you have a good "hookup" though.
