    tire tub question

While at Spring carlisle I came accross a real nice black/dark grey tire tub for an excellent price. last night I started cleaning it up and removed the V-brace so I could bead and paint it. Under the brace I found a sticker (see the pic). I've never seen one before so I'm curious about it. Any insight?

These have been reported previously. Rockwell was the supplier of many fiberglass components.

By the way, these tubs were not originally painted. They were natural gray finish with very visible fiberglass strands, at least for most earlier C3. I also think that bead blasting will make a mess of this tub.

      Hi Joe,

I thought all(?) of the FOEM FG parts were made by MFG in Ashtabula, OH ?
Or was that just for the major body panels as shown in numerous photos in Noland's books ?
      thx,

Looks like the sticker was molded in place. Does 36-70 mean the 36th week of 1970 ?

I think he's going to blast and paint the V-brace, not the tub.

If you search this board you will see my entry on the subject.(Pictures Also) Best results for the tub is "soda blasting". I had the
V-Brace powder painted. BTW>Original GM type rivets can be bought at "Dr.Rebuild". Of course JMHO>Larry

              Don,

My bet is on your theory!

Blasting the V-brace, NOT the fiberglass tub. Just curious about the sticker. That's all. Simply a curiosity.

So while I'm at it, does the glass on the tub pictured look correct for a '72?

And... I'm aware that repro tubs are light grey (That's what Is in my car currently) but were the the light grey tubs ever used in production?

Yes, the tub pictured appears just right to me for a 1972.

The GM tub did change in color at some point to gray although the part number did not change. I believe it changed sometime prior to 1982 but definitely not as early as 1972.

                    Re: tire tub question

We see stickers like that often. More in 1971 and 1772 than earlier years, but they do occasionally show up earlier. Yes it means 36th week of 1972.

I too believe the OP means refinishing the V brace and not the fiberglass.

A sticker like that is present on the underside of my 71 front end near the nose crossed flags emblem. Chip.

                        Re: tire tub question

I spent some time cleaning off the 50+ years of grime yesterday and found that the sticker was inside the fiberglass, not just applied which was what I first thought. Interesting. I almost wonder whay all panels didn't get the treatment. GM was pretty good at dating parts for quality control.

I have seen similar molded-in Rockwell stickers on some body panels of my late 1970. I will check my tire tub.
