Were N11 factory installed mufflers marked using a stencil or stamp? 1967 Judging guide uses both stamp and stencil to describe the marking. which is correct? Thanks, Kurt

My unrestored, 54,000 mile 1967, L79 has N11 off road exhaust as documented on the tank sticker. The right side is believed to be original and has both a stamped number and remnats of yellow stenciling. See photos below. The left side has been replaced with a GM unit (welded assembly) sometime before 1974 when the car was put on blocks. This replacement has no stenciling but has a stamped "A" which I believe was for the manufacturer Arden.

Here's an original N11 exhaust system on my 435, no part numbers or stenciling that I can see. It isn't real pretty, but as of yesterday, it still sounds great.- Top

James, I hope this helps. Both are the same configuration. It's in a tight spot in the garage, so not the best picture.Attached Files- Top

Thanks for the pictures. I think stencil or stamp may be the supplier difference. Nolans book shows an ink stamp on pg.366. Many have reported stencils too.- Top

Re: 1967 - N11 "Off Road Assy" marking on mufflers, stamp or stencil?
Tim,
So they look to be crimped. Why I asked is because the most recent 1965 judging manual says that N11 systems have a welded seam. I find it hard to beleive that an N11 system would be assembled any different than a standard system which are said to be crimped.
Thanks again for the pictures.

Re: 1967 - N11 "Off Road Assy" marking on mufflers, stamp or stencil?
OK, hear is a 65 N11, it was stated as being on an original car (owner Bloom?) Just can make out the crimping along the seam.
My present day understanding it that the production exhaust had the yellow paint and an embossed "A", mine were replaced with GM one's in 1971 at a cost of $30.21 each.
Could the JG be talking about the fact that the mufflers are welded onto the pipes?
Tim appears to have original N11, so are his crimped or welded?Attached Files- Top

Alan,
I don't have the '65 judging guide in front of me, but I remeber reading it was specific about the muffler seams being welded on '65 N11 mufflers. Will verify this tonight when i get back home.
