Re: 58 Corvette Fiberglass Repair Questions

I have been reading up on fiberglass repair but have questions when it comes to the supplies I need to purchase. I read that I should get Fiberglass mat versus cloth. I am not sure what type of resin I need to get or if there is just 1 type. This would be for a 58 Corvette. Was also wondering if I can purchase this stuff locally or if it is something that pretty much has to be ordered. I live in Houston, TX.

Can anyone tell me what materials I need to get for this?

Jason, I can send you all the fiberglass Mat you want. The Oklahoma Chapter has a giant roll of it. I dont know the weight of it but the mat is such that you can split it twice for use. You pay the UPS and send your address to me. Fogaley@sbcglobal.net Scott
Another idea on how to make those flanges is to buy fiberglass sheet in 1/16 or 1/8" which should come in a 4x4 or 4x8 sheet and make your patterns, lay them the sheet, cut out and glue to the fenders. I have used old broken hoods or the rear decks of C3s for a source of flat fiberglass.
Houston should have several Corvette repair facilities who would have left over fiberglass. Nabor Brothers comes to mind.

Re: 58 Corvette Fiberglass Repair Questions

Hey Richard, thanks again for the pics and the measurements. I love how you used masking tape to show the measurements, makes it very easy to understand.

I have 2 more questions. Can you tell me what the thickness is of the "lip" on the rear end? Also, what is the depth that the "lip" sticks out from the body? Is it an inch, 3/4 of an inch, etc...?

              Thanks,
              Jason

I commend you on your work very impressive - I cringed when I saw you rear fender but wow what a job you did. I have done some minor fiberglass work and it does take time and patience. You should run a class.

The combination of the measurements, your bumper brackets location and holding bumpers in place should get all your alignments.
