Black paint on master cylinder cap

In Noland's book (pg 388) he mentions in the '67 section (may apply to other earlier years, I don't know) " the covers were finished with a cadmium 2, gold-tone plating. The covers may have also been painted black after painting". Anyone every see one with black paint? BTW- there is no mention of this "black paint" in the judging manual.

1967+ dual master cylinders were painted prior to machining so there's no way the covers were installed at that point. So, there would have been no paint on the covers. As far as other reasons for paint on the covers the only one I can surmise is post-factory painting by an owner, detail shop, or by a commercial rebuilder that painted the master cylinders after rebuild with the cover installed.

Joe, I certainly can't disagree with your comments, but I wonder why and or what evidence Noland had on this topic that would make him make such a statement. I guess we will never know.

Noland did his research based on paper surveys as well as observation accounts.
I don't think that there was the same level of direct support and multi-car evidence that we currently use in writing the Judging Guides, at least in my experience. As such, there has to be a bit of skepticism applied to some of the comments.

Having said that, I really do like that book.

There is no such thing as gold cadmium.
Cadmium being extremely toxic was used only in special applications, and a brake MC would be the last place Cad would have been needed.

Better possibility is yellow chromate ovver zinc.

But then, one of you the x GM-ers that has that stack of prints could help out to show us the spec notes...
