    1968 427 L-71 camshaft/ lifters and springs

I am rebuilding a 427/435 motor, where on earth do I find the cam, lfters and springs ? all of archived posts seem to say not available. Please advise on Comp Cams 11-106-3 or Speedpro CS-165-R . I have another motor that came inthe car with the correct cam/ lifters /springs ect. the sounds are what judges listen to and it is unique to the solid lifter cams. please advise, thank you, Scott

The Speed Pro (Federal Mogul CS-165R) is an exact replica... IF you cant fine one.

Forget Comp Cams. If you can't find the above look at Elgin and Howard's Cams. They have duplicates of most of the SB cams, and I think they also have dups of the BB cams. Look at their Web sites. Mechanical lifters are the same piddle valve type as currently offered for SBs. Buy the lifters with the cam from the same manufacturer.

Basic .050" lifter rise specs are 242/242/108/120/114/.306/.306... same lobe on both sides. The net of the clearance ramp .050" lifter rise duration is 231 degrees. This is an excellent broad torque bandwidth SHP mechanical lifter camshaft with moderate overlap that is best for OE exhaust manifolds. Don't get talked into something else.

Your engine originally had the prone-to-fail first design single spring-damper design. The superior second design dual spring with integral umbrella seal is not longer offered by GM and there never was an exact aftermarket duplicate, but Joe Lucia found a setup that's close and should work well. If he doesn't chime in here, shoot him an email.

The Sealed Power/Federal-Mogul VS708 valve spring was identical to the 2nd design GM spring. Unfortunately, the VS708 spring "died" with the death of its manufacturer, Federal-Mogul. They can be found on eBay, though.

The special valve cap (retainer), GM #3964264, with integral umbrella seal and which Speed-Pro specified had to be used with the VS708 was never available in the aftermarket although the umbrella seal component of it is available. The 3964264 was discontinued from SERVICE by GM in August, 2013.

Rich, you do know that website is in Australia? approx. 12 hr time difference if one calls, not to mention import/export fees (CUSTOMS).

Ooops, I didn't even notice. It was the only one that had it.

            Since it's USA made, I don't think there'd be a tariff though.

I just found out they have 10 available on Ebay
But they won't ship to USA.

So do you have a current recommendation for BB valve spring, retainer, and seal?

I believe the Melling VS-940. which is available, is equivalent to the Sealed Power VS-708. However, it would still require the use of the GM #3964264 cap/seal.

Elgin 905P is a duplicate of the L-71 cam made by an OE supplier with parkerized lobes. It is sold by competitionproducts.com for the friendly price of $102.95. It is a quality piece.
