D308R or D309R distributor cap

Good morning everyone,
Trying to get my 1972 350/200 ready for judging in June & I am totally confused about which one to get.
The holy bible says that it has to say patent pending with the R. My original is long gone.

Most 60’s and early/mid 70’s Corvettes with externally adjusted points use a D-308 PATENT PENDING black Distributor Cap. L88 cars used a D-309 brown Distributor Cap. Other exceptions are 63-65 FI cars which use a short tower D-310 cap and dual window D-324 caps on externally adjusted dual points used in 61/62 FI cars. The “R” on the D-308 caps began in early 1968. The “047” caps are later service replacements.

Good to hear from you. Thank you for the info. Very confusing about what to use. Some people say D309 black cap. Some people say D308 with the black cap. The Bible just says patent pending with the R. Could I use either or?

As far as I know Black D-309 distributor caps do not exist.

For sure they will both fit Mark , just the D-309 are colour brown and mostly used on Big block , 427/L88 the D-308 is Black and they both have the Delco Remy / Patent Pending on top and that what NCRS are looking for , the D-308 is your best bet Mark.

Seems to some confusion here.
The only Distributor cap that is judging correct is a Delco Black D-308 with PATENT PRNDING R. The brown D-309, the short tower FI D-310 and the dual window D-324 all can be found with PATENT PENDING R embossed on the top. All will function but only the Black D-308 will judge properly.

Black D309's do exist, but only as Patent Pending R caps, they all have copper contacts. All Patent Pending D309's are brown.
All D308s in every configuration have aluminum contacts.
