    Correct Heater Box

I am considering purchasing an original outside heater box and want to make sure it is correct. Pictures look like my original heater box but part number is 3156854 and mine is 3846352. Part listed as for 1964-1967 which would indicate a different year than my 1966. Would anyone know if this part would be acceptable for my 1966?

    Walter,

3846352 is the GM part number for the heater cover and blower motor assembly, as the AIM describes in UPC1 ASM Sheet D6, Item 6.

3156854 may be the GM part number for the heater cover separately, without the blower motor.

    Here is a original
3846352 from a '67 I restored years ago. Car was build in March.

Edit - I found another. This from a Nov 1966 built '67. The 1967 AIM states 3895963 heater and motor assembly. I have no idea why the part number change between 1966 and 1967 per the AIMs. Something was obviously different, but not sure if it was a change in the cover, or the motor.

(I don't think it was the addition of a factory hornet nest)

      Re: Correct Heater Box

The early 1963 outer boxes were different and were prone to breaking around the heater core pipe openings. Later in the 1963 production they added more fiberglass material around the heater core pipe openings to strengthen that area. I believe that late 1963 shape/style remained unchanged all the way through to the end of 1967 production. That means that any outer heater box dated 1964 or later will appear correct and the only one that will know that your date is potentially wrong will be you because the date code can't be seen when installed.

See the picture below that is an early 1963 design outer heater box. You can see that there is no "rib" around the heater core pipe holes that was added later in 1963 production.

        Richard,
My '67 AIM on page UPC 1 ASM D6 (DWG Date 5-9-66) indicates ITEM 6 is #3895963 Heater & Blower assy. My car is an April 67 build.
Unfortunately, during my restoration, the box was destroyed after my car rolled over it and I had to obtain a replacement.
However, the part number agrees with the AIM.
