    Muncie Rebuild Article

There is an article in Hot Rod Magazine on rebuilding the Muncie M22 Transmission and adding an overdrive unit to it.

The Muncie M22 is known as the Rock Crusher. See how we improve its strength and versatility by adding a Gear Vendors Overdrive.

Nice article but would it fit in a Corvette?

Will the GV OD unit fit in a Corvette? Well, yes and no. I have one installed in my C3 and mated it to my M-22 in the body-off rolling chassis, so that part was easier. Requires a shorted or a custom-made driveshaft (I did the latter).

Here's the catch. The tunnel area below the vicinity of the parking brake handle will need to be bumped out a little and re-fiberglassed in a couple of areas, both on the left and right side of the bottom tunnel area. It is a tight fit for the seats in trying to adjust them to the most forward position after the rework. I also carefully shaved off some aluminum housing off the GV unit in a couple of places, as space is a premium.

GV has a version of the GM 4-Speed Muncie adaption that consists of 3 separate pieces, rather than two, which I understand is tailored specifically for Corvette so that installation in a bodied vehicle is possible. (did not make a difference in my case as I had space to work with).

Again, I did not install it in a bodied chassis, so I had plenty of room to work with. This is what mine looked like:

If you are serious about considering this option, email me and I can share some info and pics that detail the areas needed to be modified on the body, as well as the shifter bracket modification to the frame, and the parking brake pulley bracket that needs to be removed and re-attached to the frame with some unique "engineering" that works. Also, the seat belt frame in the tunnel needs to be removed and replaced with late '69 type brackets and longer inner seat belts again from '69. Truthfully a lot of work, but ... it will eventually fit and provide that OD "5th" gear for higher speed driving, especially with shorter differential gearing (i.e. 4.11).

Would I recommend it to any other Corvette owner who does not have patience and mechanical ability to modify parts? NO!! Would I recommend it to even those skilled but have a body on the frame? No! But body-off rolling chassis, with patience and skill ability (and affordability - the GV unit ain't cheap!), well then then maybe.
