All original 1968-71 Corvette AIR pumps were equipped with a white centrifugal filter ("fan"). Sometime after 1971 the color changed to black for PRODUCTION and earlier SERVICE replacement "fans".

Jim, That is Not a 1968 pump. It is most likely a 1978 based on the stamp, case and back. Here are pictures of a 1968 small block pump. The pump is long gone, but I have a bunch of pictures of all the parts if interested email me at toylman@aol.com

Thank you both for correcting the newbie. Looks like my anxiousness to get the car right bit me in the A** again. Keep on trucking.

Can you explain the date code on my pump please. 6084Y.... I read it as 60th day of 68. I was nevet sure of the 4 stamp but billl hodel told me that the Y was stamped on 68 only. Bill wad on vacation he has not seen this pump

        Thx
        Jim

As far as I know, the "Y" model AIR pump was used only for 1968 and 1969 L-88/ZL-1. Can you post some more photos of the pump from different angles? It's possible it is a pump that was built up by a commercial rebuilder with components from different original pumps. Also, please post several photos of the diverter valve you have.

Joe, Look at Jim's pictures of the case and back and compare them to your pumps for '75 and newer applications. Jim, look at your stamp again for a lightly stamped character in front of the 6 for a date of X60 (3 digit day of year) and 8 for year. I have seen others say the number before the letter may be for the shift, but 4th shift makes no sense.
Here are pictures of the '68 small block diverter valve 24765 with clip on muffler and Wittek clamp dated 2nd quarter of '68 with hose/bracket in place of cast elbow used on '69 and later pumps.

Yes, I have little doubt that the rear plate of the pump is from a much later pump and not a 1968. I don't think that casting number even existed in 1968. However, as I mentioned, I think the later rear plate can be used on a 1968 pump body and commercial rebuilders may interchange them in their rebuilding process. I think the "Y" model pump stamped on the main body of the pump was used only for 1968 and 1969 L-88/ZL-1. That's why I asked Jim to post photos of the main body of the pump as well as the diverter valve.

I don’t see the relief valve on the pump. I don’t think it’s a 68 pump body. I’m not so sure Y was only used in 68. I believe the letter code is for the plant that made the pump or where the pump needed to go for assembly on the engine or possible application. I forgot which…..
