No need to be confused, leave them original and be glad they are. I'll take condition deductions all day long, I don't want originality points to be taken away.

      Anthony,

The simple question that needs to be answered is: can you, or a person you pay to do it, paint those items such that they look completely consistent with how they looked when GM did it? If so, then you should not lose any originality points.

Except with Anthony's 8000 mile car, and restoration won't "flow" as Terry McM likes to say.

        Leave it alone.
Then again, I may have said that before...

Agree with Gary. You were having the car Flight Judges not Bowtie Judged. If you painted the entire cover and they appeared as original, no deduction. If you touched them up and it was obvious, then there is a deduction.

          Back to the game.....

I haven't seen the car in question -- that I know of -- so degrees of paint and/or corrosion are not on my radar, but as a generalization:

As Patrick has said -- the car should flow. That is a car that is mostly original should stay that way and efforts at restoration will stand out because a mostly original car not only has to meet the standard of "how the factory did it" but also retain the patina that goes with a half centenary aged car. That is a higher hurdle to cross than simply as the factory did it. It is not an impossible hurdle, but for most of us it is a stretch too far.

If the car has been restored then "touch-up" restoration is often the better choice. Simple and easy. Just repeat what was done in the restoration, or if that work was not adequate -- do it again better.

There are cars that are (not my term originally, but I like it. Thank you Bill) "tweeners" parts off the car have been restored, but not all of it. In that case your decision has to be based on how that part of the car you are considering working on has been treated in the past. FWIW: Tweeners are the hardest cars to get to The Mark of Excellence. Avoid falling into this black hole if at all possible.
