    68 tachometer cable

I ordered a new tachometer cable from corvette central and the inner cable seems too short to go up into the distributor. I removed the section of the dash that houses the speedometer and tachometer. Before i removed the new cable from the packing that it came in i noticed the crimped end was at the small nut which screws onto the tachometer. I installed it onto the tachometer and then i started to connect the other end onto the distributor and the inner cable inside the outer sheath was barely sticking up past the nut that screws onto the distributor. I screwed it on to the distributor cross shaft and the inner cable does not go into the cross shaft enough to turn the tachometer. When I turn the inner cable by hand the tachometer moves smoothly. I also started the car without a cable connected and and verified the cross shaft was turning properly. I took the cross shaft out and screwed the cable on it and the inner shaft would not turn the cable. I think the new cable i got from corvette central center cable is cut too short . Need to know if anybody else has ran into this problem.

    Brandon,
Return the Corvette Central cable and order one from these folks...you'll be happy you did.

Thanks ,I will call tomorrow and get one ordered. Corvette Central cable must have came from China, the inner cable is just too short.

        Re: 68 tachometer cable

I had a similar experience from another Corvette Restoration Parts supplier (made in China). Inner cable too short to function. I made another mistake by buying a genuine AC inner replacement cable to make it to the proper length required, but placed it in the China outer cable jacket, properly lubed up. Only 1,000 miles later, the inner cable bound-up inside the cable jacket. Fortunately, no damage to the distributer gears. Luckily, I had saved my original outer cable, cleaned it up, and re-ordered an AC inner cable, cut it to proper length, lubed, and installed into the original jacket. No issues, working great.

Apparently, the Chinese jacket and the inner cable are both smaller in diameter than the original, enough to make a difference in the long run when a slightly larger dia. AC inner cable is used with that smaller Chinese outer jacket.

How a supplier can sell a cable assembly that is visually OBVIOUSLY too short to function is beyond me!

Do you know how long the genuine cable is suppose to be? The one that came out of my 68 was 32 inches long and the one from corvettecentral was 23 inches long but was long enough to reach but eckler's cables are 19 inches long. I thought about ordering a inner cable cut to fit but i'm not sure what the correct length is correct.

I got a cable from speedometercablesusa and it worked perfect. The cable jacket was bigger diameter and good quality.

              Brandon,
Glad it worked out for you. I'm not surprised...they're a terrific outfit.
